((In 2002 a movie called "The Ring" scared the crap out of me. (I'm not
even a big fan of scary movies). When I saw the previews for "The
Grudge" I thought to myself "this is going to be a "Ring" copycat".
Fifteen minutes into "The Grudge" I was hooked. It was so good, I lost
track of how many times the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. A
very good sign for fans of scary movies!
Sarah Michelle Gellar (from this point on to be referred to as "SMG")
is Karen an American nurse living in Tokyo with her boyfriend Doug
(Jason Behr). She works for sort of a "meals on wheels" nursing agency
that sends care givers to patient's homes. When one of the other
caregivers doesn't show up for work SMG is sent out in her place. She
finds the house a mess and the woman she is supposed to be caring for
alone and neglected. It doesn't take long for her to realize that there
is something supernatural in the house as she and the woman are
attacked by a very strange Japanese ghost (?). I can't tell any more,
just go see it!
Like I said earlier, I'm not a big fan of scary movies, but I found
"The Grudge" to be tight and very, very scary. One of the most
interesting things about the movie is the nonlinear timeline. You see
scenes that really don't make sense at first. The filmmakers give you
just enough to intrigue you and fill in the blanks later. "The Grudge"
isn't a teen scary movie it's intelligent and smart, not the typical
drivel that appeals to a younger crowd. This film is a remake of a
Japanese film called "Ju-On" but the same director that did the
Japanese version also does this version. Very smart! Who else would be
able to keep it tight and not "Americanize" it too much. The script is
excellent, no major holes to speak of and there are some cameo
appearance by some really decent actors. Bill Pullman, Clea Duvall and
Grace Zabriskie (you'll recognize her as Susan's mother on Seinfeld)
have brief roles, but give good performances. The special effects will
remind viewers of "The Ring", but not to the point where it's annoying.
The effects are down right terrifying and the movie doesn't rely on
them for all of the scares and tension.
If you like to be scared, this movie has got your name written all over
it.
