Good evening folks and welcome to one of the most intriguing editions of Friday Football Extra in recent years. Despite the rain, the cold and the handful of postponements that the elements precipitated - most of the big important games were played right on schedule tonight. We have the highlights of 10 games for you tonight, plus the new start times for the 10 postponed contests in the area, and we'll attempt to make some sense of the playoff situation.

With all due respect to the other schools on this half of the state, nothing tonight could match the anticipation surrounding Salem vs. Pulaski Co. Friday Football Extra's most storied programs met tonight in a do or die winner take all Region Three, Division Four River Ridge showdown.

Region Three division four is one of the toughest in all of the state, and with only one wildcard spot available, Amherst County knew all it had to do tonight was win at home against Heritage and it was heading to playoffs - no matter what Pulaski and Salem did in their game.

[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=53-Amherst Co./Heritage vs. Amherst Co.; :00]

The rain was still coming down pretty hard by the time the Pioneers and Lancers kicked things off. In the first quarter Heritage's Chris Cook will make the short pass to John Mills. And Mills turn and burn for 47 yards and huge play for the visitors. Several plays later Cook will keep the ball and pick up a first down at the Amherst three, but he fumbles the ball and the Lancers' Rodney Gibson will recover for the homeboys. Late in the first, Amherst would move all the way down to the Heritage 12, and Pierre Tinsley will let Jonathan Rose takes the handoff. He will slip and slide his way a dozen yards for the score. It's 6-to-nothing after the failed two point conversion. In the second quarter, Heritage's Cook would find himself back in his own endzone passing. Tim Moss is the intended receiver, but Alonzo Poe makes the interception for the Lancers deep in Heritage territory.

The hot chocolate was flowing tonight as the Eagles tried to pull off the upset of the year. But Liberty would take advantage of its muddy home field, from the 48 O.B. Blake will get the rock to Stephen Toler who will bust one around the far end. No one is close and he is gone - 52 yards for the score and it's 7-to-nothing Minutemen. On the next possession, Blake will call his own number and this time he will take it around the right end. He picks up 20 yards and a touchdown. It's 15-to-nothing after the two point conversion. Going into the second quarter, the Minutemen are back inside the red zone. This time Toler goes right up the middle for 14 tough yards on some aggressive running. On the next play, Toler takes it in on the five yard run to make it a 22-to-nothing game in favor of Liberty.
[SUPER=50-Staunton River/7/Liberty/43;]

Late in the second, from 28 yards out Blake airs it out over the middle as Marvin Chambers makes the grab in stride for the score. Liberty wins it 43-to-7.

But what this division lacked in suspense, it more than made up for in spirit with it rivalry games. Cave Spring and Hidden Valley squared off last night at Dwight Bogle Field in a cross-street rivalry. Route 419 is the only thing separating the two school districts and almost all of these Knights and Titans grew up together on the rec fields of south county. It was parents' night in Floyd as senior football players, band members and cheerleaders were all recognized with Mom and Dad before the game. Both teams had trouble hendling the wet ball early as there were four first half fumble including this one by Floyd's Chris Collins, as Radford recovers. But after giving it right back to the Buffs, the Bobcats would get a taste of Floyd's air attack. Daniel Grim finds a sliding Brandon Dooley for a 10 yard touchdown to make it 7-to-nothing in the first. Now in the second, Grim will again go upstairs - this time looking for Mike Davis. He comes back for the catch and that's what playing smart will do for you. It's a 28 yard touchdown and Floyd is up 13-to-nothing at the break. It would be more of the same in the second half. Grim finds his man Brandon Dooley again, and he will break a tackle and race down the sideline gaining 26 yards to the Bobcats' 17 yard line. Chris Collins will finish off the drive running over the defender and scoring from five yards out. Floyd leads 19-to-nothing.

It's 7-to-nothing Raiders. The Vikings would then have the ball on theor own 30, and quarterback Daniel Will and Russell Horn will mess up the handoff, and Patrick McNamara recovers for the Raiders. They would turn the turnover into a TD as Edwards barrels over te right side for 6 more. The Raiders take a 14-to-nothing lead with 1:24 left in the first quarter.
