The agency says the suspect animal did *not* enter the food chain. It's now trying to trace the animal from where it was tested to the farm from which it originated. Mad cow disease attacks the animal's nervous system. People who eat contaminated meat can get a rare disease that's almost always fatal. In the only confirmed U-S case eleven months ago, a Canadian-born Holstein was found to have been infected. That one case prompted more than three dozen countries to refuse U.S. beef, hurting export sales and the farm economy.
