Verizon has petitioned Virginia's State Corporation Commission to raise its phone rates for both residential and commercial customers in rural areas. If the commission approves the request -- some rates in the state could go up by 10-percent. Verizon officials say the company is struggling in rural areas because the rates they charge are below the operating cost. A public hearing on the matter will be held later today at the State Corporation Commission in Richmond.
