Good evening everybody and welcome to the Thanksgiving edition of Friday Football Extra. It has been another season in which many teams in southwest and central Virginia have had plenty of reasons to give thanks. Tonight, we'll crown regional champs from Amherst to just past Clay Pool Hill. Five champions in all will crowned tonight as we set the bracket for next Saturday's state semi-finals.
[GRAPHIC=GRETNA/CHRISTIANSBURG]

We begin tonight in Region Three, division three where the Christiansburg Blue Demons tried to do what not team has been able to do the past two season - find a way to beat the Gretna Hawks. Last week the Hawks came from behind with 37 points in the fourth quarter to beat Cave Spring. Tonight - they took on the Blue Demons on their home field.

(( Generic open The Blue Demons would strike first on a fourth and two from the Gretna 42, Andrew Hoffer rolls to his right and he will unleash a bomb deep to Jacques LaBoone, who hauls in the pass at the one yard line. On the next play, Jared Alcom who carries it in to open the scoring. It's 7-to-nothing Blue Demons. Gretna's counter punch would prove to be deadly. Vic Hall is looking for the open receiver out of the gun and he goes across the middle. The ball is tipped and Matt Short stays focused and reels the ball in. He also will roll 70 yards for the score with the deflection. It's 7-to-6 after the missed kick. Christiansburg would come right back. Nick Thompson would find some room to his right for a huge 34 yard gain. That led to another score for the Burg to make it 14-to-6 Blue Demons. Gretna would try to get something going on offense immediately. Hall throws a quick out that is stopped by DeShawn Grandy. He will strip the ball from the receiver's hand and secure the turnover. Nine plays later, Alcom punches in another TD from the one to make it 21-to-6 on the first play of the second quarter.
Hall would again attempt to rally back the Blue Demons. Hall takes off around the left side and he just outruns the defense for the endzone. It's 21-to-12 still in the second. But Christiansburg would get one more before halftime. Alcom fights his way in up the middle and makes it a 28-to-12 game at halftime in favor of Christiansburg. But for football fans in southwest Virginia it was deja vu all over again as Gretna turned in yet another miracle second half comeback. In the third, Hall comes right into your living room and get used to this picture. It's now 28-to-20 - the lead is cut to 8. The Gretna defense then reared its head. Hoffer's pass to the left is batted in the air Horrace Hubbard, his teammate Lamar White will pick it out of midair. He will keep his balance and go 73 yards the other way. They get six more and now it's 28-to-26. The Blue Demons could have quit, but in the fourth they came back on a 4th and 10 from the Gretna 15 - Hoffer scrambles, spins and fights his way down to the one which set up another plunge. It's now 36-to-26 Demons. Hall would strike quickly to counter that as Hall executes a four play drive with a 45 yard TD pass to Matt Short. The two point conversion is also good and now Gretna trails 36-to-34. Gretna would keep coming later in the quarter as Hall dances in on a two play drive from the 10. Gretna is finally on top 42-to-36. Then with 438 to play - Christiansburg would go 65 yards in 9 plays capped by the Hoffer keeper. But they missed the kick and we're tied at 42-all. Gretna would go 69 yards to complete the comeback as Hall hits a wide open Jason Myers for the score, and his 100th career touchdown pass with six seconds to play. The Hawks do it again - winning 49-to-42.))

The stands looked a little empty, but for good reason. The Blue Tornados marching band was in Philadelphia for the Thanksgiving parade. But the home fans picked up the slack in terms or pep. The football team also was trying to make some racket. On a fourth and inches from the Bengals' 25, but Thad Wells is stuffed, and Bassett takes over on downs. Richlands would get the ball back and Cain Ringstaff would take the rock down the right side for 50 yards and a touchdown as the Blue Tornados hit paydirt first to take a 7-to-nothing lead. Bassett would try to get something started on offense as Brandon Dillard scrambles to his left. He throws against his body for the impressive hookup with Josh Tyree for a gain of 11 yards and a first down. Richlands would stop that drive and take over again, but this time Wells pass it picked off by Tyree and he will take it 31 yards to the house for the defensive score. It's 7-to-6 after the missed kick. The Bengals would later look for some offense, but Dillard is sacker by Garrett Arms and the Blue Tornados get the ball back.
[SUPER=50-Bassett/6/Richlands/7;]

Richlands would again fail to capitalize as again the pass is picked off. But the Blue Tornados do just enough to win it 7-to-6.

Of course, tonight's chain of events means that Salem will travel to Richlands next Saturday for the state semi-finals. It's a rematch of the now-infamous 1992 game won by the Blue Tornados. By the way - Willis White was the coach of that Salem team in 1992 and many of his former players are busy preparing for a banquet in his honor on May 14th of next year at the Salem Civic Center. The event is for any former player of coach White's. You can get more information on the event by checking out the the event's web site... "COACH WILLIS WHITE.COM."

William Campbell and head coach Brad Bradley would hit the field in the battle of Generals. But it was the Generals on the home side that controlled the battlefield tonight. Danny Brogan will hand off to Terrence Elam, who will break through the defense and take the ball 53 yards for the touchdown as William Campbell takes the early 7-to-nothing lead. Later in the first quarter, the Generals will try that combination again. Brogan to Elam and again he breaks one off good and proper rolling 30 yards for the touchdown. It's 14-to-nothing. Now in the second quarter, William Campbell will try the forward pass, and Brogan will hook up with Matt Barbour. The two will net 38 yards on the catch and a penalty moving the ball into Stonewall territory. Seven plays later, Barbour will carry the load and score from the 10. The William Campbell Generals are rolling, on top 21-to-nothing in the second quarter. Stonewall's Patrick Smoot would try to gather his teammates and somehow get back in the contest. Richard Long rips off a nice run down the sideline for 23 yards and a TD. The visiting Generals cut the William Campbell lead to 21-to-6.

Stonewall would then get the two point conversion from Smoot to Brandon Ferrell to make it a 21-to-8 game in the second. But William Campbell was on automatic tonight. Brogan looks downfield and finds Andrew Davis, who makes the impressive catch. He won't stop until he picks up 53 yards. On the very next play, Brogan will fire the bullet pass to Barbour for the touchdown.

The other game involving teams from the Friday Football Extra area, Lebanon and Giles meet tomorrow for the Region C, division two title at Harry Stuart Field. The Pioneers and Spartans have a rich playoff history and tomorrow's game will mark the fifth time the two have met in the postseason. As a matter of fact, Giles had a 25 game winning streak from 1992 to 1994. That streak began after a loss to Lebanon and ended with a loss to Lebanon. The game kicks-off tomorrow at 1:30.

In fact, every single Region D game and even last week's Lebanon game have been played on Saturday instead of Friday.
