(( "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE ONE, THE ONLY, BOBBY DARIN!"
To millions of Americans, Bobby Darin was the King of Cool.

(NATS) "I WANT IT ALL!.."

And he GOT it all, but died when he was just 37 years old, his heart weakened by rheumatic fever. The Grammy winner and sixties movie star is broght back to life in BEYOND THE SEA... pet project of Oscar winner Kevin Spacey.

(SOT KELLY COBIELLA/KEVIN SPACEY) "YOU WERE A BOBBY DARIN FAN BEFORE

THIS PROJECT CAME UP? SPACEY: WELL, IT STARTED WITH MY MOTHER... SHE WAS NUTS ABOUT BOBBY DARIN SO I GREW UP IN A HOUSE WHERE BOBBY DARIN WAS PLAYING ON THE RECORD PLAYER ALL THE TIME."

(NATS) "WHAT'S THE PLAN? WHERE WE GONNA BE IN FIVE YEARS?"

The film shines a spotlight on Darin's quick rise to the top of music charts, and on his relationships, including his rocky marriage to Sandra Dee, played by Kate Bosworth.

(NATS) "WHERE'S MY SYMPATHY? WELL, YOU'RE DOING A PRETTY GOOD JOB

FEELING SORRY FOR YOURSELF ALL ALONE."

(SOT: KATE BOSWORTH) "AT FIRST I FELT A LOT OF PRESSURE TO PLAYING HER

JUST BECAUSE SHE'S SUCH AN ICON AND SO MANY PEOPLE GO, OH, I LOVE SANDRA DEE! AND I WOULD THINK, OH GREAT, I HAVE TO FIGURE OUT EXACTLY WHAT SHE WAS ALL ABOUT!"
Spacey felt pressure, too... from critics, who complain he's too old to play Darin... and from the singer's family. It took months to convince them he could carry Darin's tunes.

(SOT: KEVIN SPACEY) "THEY'VE SEEN IT AND THEY'RE OVER THE MOON SO FOR

ME, I FEEL LIKE I'VE FACED THE BIGGEST CRITICS I COULD HAVE FACED AND ANYTHING FROM THIS POINT IS ICING ON THE CAKE."
For Spacey, none would be sweeter than movie fans walking out of this film still humming a tune sung by the man who gave his heart to entertain. Kelly Cobiella, CBS NEWS, New York. ))
