(( "Christmas with the Kranks" (Columbia Pictures) Review by: Joel Sink Take a John Grisham novel add Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dan Akroyd and what do you get? Unfortunately, one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. Don't think I'm Scrooge McMovie Reviewer, keep reading and I'll explain. Luther and Nora Krank (Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis) are typical tearful parents as their daughter Blair (Julie Gonzalo) boards a plane for Peru to work for the Peace Corps. "I love you Momme, I love you Daddy - see you next year." Luther and Nora boo hoo and think "what are we going to do this Christmas without our Blair"? Boo hoo. Luther get's a bright idea, why not just skip Christmas (and all the expense) and go on a luxurious 10 day cruise in the Caribbean instead? Luther talks Nora into his sun filled getaway idea, but takes the idea to extremes. Luther turns away the Boy Scouts at the front door when he decides not to buy a tree and tics the whole neighborhood off when he refuses to put "Frosty" on the roof like every other family on the street does. Vic Frohmeyer (Dan Akroyd) is the neighborhood Christmas Nazi who gets everyone to gang up on the Kranks to picket, sing, and taunt the living daylights out of them. Luther and Nora make it through all the taunting and are packing for their trip on Christmas eve when they receive a call from Blair. "Mommie and Daddy I'm on my way home for Christmas and I'll be there tonight". Whoa! Luther and Nora have to put their vacation on hold to put Christmas back together in time for Blair (and her Fiancee's) arrival. I'm not quite sure how they did it, but the film makers turned this movie into a big, fat, boring chore. I expected to laugh a lot - I didn't. I expected to leave the theatre in a "Christmas spirit" - I didn't. I have not read the John Grisham novel, but I'm wondering if the novel was really a black comedy? I kept feeling like the film makers were trying to make one kind of movie and the script was a blueprint for something very different. The slapstick humor is so incredibly lame, you wonder how they thought it would ever be funny. The script is so thin and weak, you could probably see right through it. How could all of these talented people be involved in this project and nobody said "Hold it!" this movie is absolute crap? Amazing! The world would have been better off if they had taken the money it took to put this awful movie together and given it to service organizations to help local communities during the holidays. What a waste. Rated: PG Joel's take: 3 out of 10 ))
