A 5-year old boy has died after he was injured in accident yesterday afternoon. Police say it happened around two on Thompson Memorial Boulevard in Roanoke County. Officers say 31-year-old Glovern Ray Phipps of Salem ran his pickup truck off the right side of the road and hit an embankment. Phipps' five-year-old son Ryan Danson Phipps, was taken to the hospital this morning, where he later died. Phipps was arrested for D-U-I. Officers say he could face more charges.

Police are looking for a Lynchburg man they suspect shot a cab driver.
Lynchburg police believe 21 year old Desaun Steven Johnson shot the cab driver twice early Sunday morning.
Police have not located him and say he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Today, MeadWestvaco donated Falling Spring and its surrounding property to the Virginia State Park system. Unlike most falls in the Commonwealth that are cascades or slides, Falling Spring is a drop of about 150-feet "off an overhanging ledge." It's one of the most visited sites in the Alleghany Highlands, and officials say the donation is a big step toward increasing the area's recreation and tourism.

The Mountaineers had been the front-runner for the Big East's guaranteed B-C-S bowl bid before their 36-to-17 upset loss to Boston College two weeks ago. West Virginia then ended the regular season with another disappointing loss a 16-to-13 loss to Pittsburgh on Thanksgiving night. WVU finished with an 8-and-3 record, 4-and 2 in the Big East. The Mountaineers have made four previous appearances in the Gator Bowl losing all four. They most certainly will face Florida State in the January 1st game.

Just when it looked like UVa's football team would not be making a bowl trip this year - it now appears that it will making a trip to Shreveport, Louisiana for the Independence Bowl.

After Saturday's loss to Tech UVa president John Casteen issued a statement saying that the Cavs would not take part in any bowl that conflicted with final exams. That knocked UVa out of the December Champs Sports Bowl, however, it appears that the ACC is now close to finalizing a deal to send the Cavs to the Independence Bowl on December 28th in Shreveport, Louisiana. The Washington Post says while the deal is not done it is close, and that Uva would likely play Oklahoma State in the Ark-La-Tex. The Independence bowl has an opening because South Carolina pulled out of the postseason last week.

Virginia University of Lynchburg began as a co-ed Baptist seminary for black students in 1886.
A photographic exhibit of those early years is on display at C-J-M-W Architects on Main Street through the end of December.
The university is currently raising money to renovate many of its older buildings.
Officials hope the exhibit will help spark more public interest in the school. (------------)
