It was back in October of 2001 when the White House came calling. He left his job as Pennsylvania Governor to become the nations first Homeland Security Advisor.

That position was created in the wake of the 911 Terrorist attacks. He was charged with re-thinking all aspects of security within U-S borders.
Congress then passed legislation merging 180-thousand employees from 22 government agencies.That became the Homeland Security Department and Ridge was the head of it.

During his watch-Ridge presided over six national orange alerts-thats when the government heightened its security level-concerned an attack could be coming.

Ridge has said intelligence reports led him to believe that during the fourth of July holiday Al Qaeda was targeting international flights to attack the U-S. At that time passenger manifests were scrutinized and some flights were cancelled.
But an attack never happened on Ridges watch.

A head-on collision injured two people in Lynchburg this morning.

The two vehicle wreck closed the westbound lanes of Route 460 near the Campbell Avenue exit for about an hour.
Police say one of the cars was headed in the wrong direction just before the collision.
One person was taken to a local hospital by ambulance, the other by air.
Police have not yet released their names or conditions.

A Roanoke family is trying to pick up the pieces after the death of a five-year-old boy yesterday. He died about 24 hours after being in an auto accident .. and after being treated for his injuries and released.

According to police- Ryan's father, 31-year-old Glovern "Rick" Phipps was driving on Thompson Memorial Boulevard Sunday when he lost control of his pick-up truck and struck an embankment. Ryan and his seven-year-old sister Kayla were wearing their seatbelts. Police say they were taken to the hospital and released that evening.

Glovern Phipps was charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence while transporting a minor child. Police say more charges are pending.

Then the judge will sentence him. Earlier today, the penalty phase was put on hold while lawyers met with the judge behind closed doors. A defense source tells The Associated Press the court subpoenaed a local bartender who said he heard at least one juror discussing the case in his bar. Jurors aren't allowed to discuss the case outside the jury room

A national task force of veterinarians and researchers is investigating the link between the rabies vaccine and cancer in cats.
It seems some cats develop a tumor at the site where the injection is given.
