Turman's father died while making an arrest of fifteen year old Christopher Shawn Wheeler. Turman says her dad had brought in Wheeler before and knew the boy fairly well. Wheeler shot and killed Deputy Dicker during the arrest and has been serving out his sentence at the Sussex State Prison in Waverly.

Two people were hurt in a single-car accident last night in Blacksburg.

Police say a Jetta was traveling eastbound on Glade Road just after midnight -- when the driver lost control. The car veered off the road and then overturned. The driver- who was not wearing a seatbelt- was partially ejected through the sunroof and trapped under the vehicle. The driver was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The passenger was wearing a seatbelt and received only minor injuries. He was taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital for observation. Police say speed may have been a factor.

The Roanoke County fire department wants to remind folks of the fire risk that holiday decorations can bring into a home. Each year, an estimated 400 residential fires involve a Christmas tree resulting in nearly 40 deaths.

There are steps that every household can take to keep their home safe. Spradlin says a large amount of holiday fires are a result of faulty or overloaded extension cords.
