The nation's capitol is also celebrating Hanukkah. President Bush and the First Lady today lit the Menorah commemorating the third night of the Jewish Festival of Lights. As three children of a U-S Army chaplain in Iraq lit a menorah from Israel the President noted that Hanukkah is both a commemoration of a miracle -- and a celebration of freedom. The season began at sundown this Tuesday and will end at sundown next Tuesday, the 14th.

Governor Mark Warner wants 824- million- dollars in new funding to improve transportation in Virginia.

The center would mean a drastic increase in the truck and train traffic in the area. MeadWestvaco has scheduled a meeting with nearby landowners on Monday to talk about the project. NASA and the Russian Space Agency were surprised to learn last week that the two crewmen had tapped into their food reserves in mid-November, about a month earlier than expected. So flight controllers have told them to trim about 300-calories a day from their diet, at least until a Russian supply ship arrives in a little over two weeks. If anything goes wrong with the Christmas Day delivery, NASA will have to abandon the station and bring the men home since the space shuttles are grounded. Since last year's Columbia disaster, *Russian* ships have been making supply runs.

Yesterday, a crane hoisted the boat from the pier where it was constructed, and lowered it into the Elizabeth River.
The schooner must still be outfitted with masts, but the auxiliary engines donated by Salem- based Carter Machinery, and Caterpillar USA are already in place.
Eventually the ship will serve as a goodwill ambassador for the state.

Literacy Volunteers of Roanoke Valley have helped more than 25-hundred people during the organization's 20- year history.
Today, the group marked the anniversary, by recognizing its tutors and adult learners.

The non- profit organization offers basic literacy programs, and English for speakers of other languages.
Last year, 185 volunteer tutors helped more than 350 students.
