The plan calls for enhancements to Virginia's billion dollar tourism industry and the creation of a community development bank. The state has approved a license to serve alcohol at the Colonial Downs off-track betting parlor in Vinton.
The ruling allows the sale of beer, wine and mixed drinks.
Critics had argued that the type of meals Colonial Downs sold in Vinton failed to meet state A-B-C requirements. MeadWestvaco is looking at building a distribution center in the Nicelytown area of Alleghany County that would consolidate warehousing and distribution. Residents are upset and say the center would mean a drastic increase in the truck and train traffic in the area. Norfolk Southern's president says the company and Roanoke have a bright future together. Wick Moorman told the Kiwanis club about plans for an intermodal transfer facility in the Star City.
