The jail study group includes the sheriffs of Roanoke, Franklin and Montgomery Counties and the city of Salem, along with other officials from the four jurisdictions. The group has ranked the top five sites, and recommended thirteen others be dropped from consideration.

Two sites near Dixie Caverns remain at the top. The Higginbotham Farms site bounded by the Roanoke River and a Norfolk Southern rail line is number one. The Horn Property on West River Road is ranked second. Third on the list is the Newbern site, which adjoins Interstate 81 and the Days Inn at Plantation Road. The rest of the top five includes the site of the old Ingersoll Rand plant, and the Old Mountain Road site immediately behind it.

A fatal crash on route 220 south of Roanoke backed up traffic for hours this evening.

The accident occurred around 6:30 in Clearbrook and appeared to be a head-on collision involving two pick-up trucks. A third vehicle may also have been involved. One motorist was killed in the accident, but we have no word about any additional injuries. Both northbound lanes of Route 220 were shut down for hours. Police have not yet released further information.

A Collinsville father is charged with the felony endangerment of his baby boy who died last summer. Henry County investigators say 7 month old John Holley died three months after he being a passenger in an alcohol-related car accident. The sheriff's department says it can NOT determine if that collision led to the baby's death,

He also wants to cut the sales tax on food by a percent and a half. Nascar's Twin 125 qualifiers will now be 25 miles longer. The Twin 150's will also have a new name in 2005. Together they will be known as the Gatorade duel. The move could mean a change in pit strategies for the teams. There will also be a longer break in between the two Speedweeks races.

Maurice Fenner fought his way into the endzone just before the half and the Dukes led 10-7 headed to the locker room.
The Grizzlies took the lead in the third quarter, but Madison hung tough. Fenner gets in again from a couple of yards out, giving the Dukes a lead they would not give up.

Hundreds of people watched as a Dutch Boeing 747 made its way through the canals of Amsterdam last night.
The plane is traveling from Amsterdam's airport to the national air museum. The runway at the museum isn't long enough to handle a jumbo jet, so the plane's wings were cut off, and the fuselage and its wings traveled separately through the canals.
The entire trip is hardly at airplane speed. It will take four days to complete.
