A fire early this afternoon damaged an apartment building in Roanoke today.

The fire started in an upstairs bedroom at this apartment on Indian Village Lane in Southeast around 12-thirty. Three people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, and were released. The fire was contained to the bedroom, and caused about five-thousand dollars in damages. The blaze is under investigation. The cause had not been determined.

A local volunteer group helped to feed the hungry today as they passed out baskets of food loaded with goodies.

The *AMVETS Local Post 40* distributes food baskets annually to needy families in the Roanoke valley. This year the group gave out 400 baskets with enough food to feed a family for a couple of weeks. It's not an easy task but the AMVETS volunteers say they are already thinking about next year's food drive.

And just a short time later, as a funeral procession made it's way to the holy Imam Ali shrine, in nearby Najaf, a series of bombs went off. Dozens were killed and injured. Shiites are expected to show up and vote in huge numbers. Because they out-number other ethnic groups, 2-to-one, they stand to gain most from a successful election campaign. The attacks on Shiite strongholds are seen as a last ditch effort by the insurgents to stop Shiites from translating their majority into political power. Investigators say montgomery confessed to strangling bobbie jo stinett in her missouri home lat thursday, then cutting her baby from her womb. Her husband believed the child was his.

Right now he really is emotionnal bc he really was proud for a moment and then it all fell out from under him 36 year old montgomery has four children from previous marriages, but friends say she wanted a child with her new husband. She told friends she miscarried earlier this year, and shortly thereafter, said she was pregnant again.

t montgomery. She kept to herself, spending all her time at work or with her family. That changed last friday. Montgomery toured the town with her husband and an infant they called abigail, stopping at a local cafe.

I looked at her and said what the heck is this? Saw her last week and she didn't look pregnant. Montgomery was arrested later that day. Investigators tracked her down through emails and a tip. Snow and icy-covered roads are being blamed for an 80-car pileup in Pennsylvania.

Authorities say the chain reaction started just before noon on Interstate-80 in Mercer County. There are no reports yet of any fatalities, but a triage center was reportedly set up at a nearby hotel -- where injured people were being brought-in by the bus-load. A spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Highway Patrol says traffic was backed up as far as Youngstown, Ohio -- 23 miles away.

James Madison University will buy Harrisonburg's *Rockingham* Memorial Hospital for 50 million dollars. The property next door to campus includes nine buildings and two parking decks on nearly 16 acres. The hospital has announced plans to move. Construction is expected to begin in about three years. J-M-U's president says the old hospital probably will be used for academic and administrative offices, student services and parking. Governor Warner's proposed budget amendments include 40 million dollars for the purchase. J-M-U will raise the remaining *ten-million dollars.*

Instead of an intimate family meal, the Gieson family serves a free holiday dinner to all those in need. Today's event marked the 42nd straight year the Giesons put on the party, which took place in a high school. The family is able to host the dinner with donations received throughout the year. Along with the meal, they hope to give away thousands of toys to children. (------------)
