((14 YEARS AGO, TRAVIS MARCUS WAS BORN WITH A HEART DEFECT.
(NAT Where's the packers hat?)
THE BLOOD VESSEL THAT IS SUPPOSED TO CARRY BLOOD TO HIS LUNGS WAS
MIS-DELIVERING IT TO HIS BODY INSTEAD, AND IN TURN THE VESSEL THAT IS SUPPOSED
TO CARRY BLOOD TO HIS BODY WAS MIS-DELIVERING TO HIS LUNGS.
Ever since he was little he's dealt with it very well. the worst part of it for
him is that he couldn't keep up with the other kids.
IN THE PAST, SURGERIES HAD BEEN GOOD ENOUGH TO GET TRAVIS BACK ON TRACK.
BUT LAST SEPTEMBER, AFTER A LIFETIME OF OPERATIONS AND PACEMAKERS, TRAVIS'
HEART FINALLY GAVE UP.
He didn't look good at all//24 hours later he crashed and burned.
TRAVIS JOINED A LIST OF MORE THAN 3,000 PEOPLE -- ALL WAITING FOR A HEART
TRANSPLANT THIS YEAR. THE MEDIAN WAITING TIME? 230 DAYS.
For every child or every patient that is a candidate, there is 20 that are
competing for that same organ.
TREATMENT FOR TRAVIS WOULD INCLUDE BEING CONFINED TO BED WITH A TUBE HELPING
HIM BREATHE. EVEN THEN, HE WOULD ONLY HAVE 30 DAYS BEFORE HIS ORGANS WERE
PERMANENTLY DAMAGED.
Good possibility of not getting an organ fast enough and we would have lost
him.
DOCTORS NEEDED A WAY TO BUY TRAVIS SOME TIME. HELP CAME IN THE FORM OF A NEW
DEVICE CALLED THE DEBAKEY VENTRICULAR ASSIST DEVICE OR V-A-D.
IT IS A MINIATURE HEART PUMP IMPLANTED BELOW THE DIAPHRAGM NAMED AFTER ITS
INVENTOR DR. MICHAEL DEBAKEY.
TRAVIS WAS THE SECOND OF ONLY 2 CHILDREN TO RECEIVE THE DEVICE, THE FIRST HAD
NOT SURVIVED.
All the time it's going through my head how long do i have to get this kid a
heart. You've got to find a way out for this kid.
THE V-A-D TRANSPLANT WAS SUCCESSFUL, THE CLOCK AND HIS HEART WERE STILL TICKING
-- BUT, TRAVIS COULDN'T STAY ON THE DEVICE FOREVER.
(NAT Drummond Webb getting heart in cooler from plane)
AFTER 56 DAYS ON THE V-A-D, A NEW HEART ARRIVED BY PLANE.
When we finally got to explain to him that he was going to have to have a new
heart. I mean he cried. His fear was he was never going to go home. He was
going to die.
JUST DAYS AFTER SURVIVING A MARATHON 11 PLUS HOUR OPERATION, TRAVIS IS ALREADY
FEELING BETTER.
(NAT I hear you're a minnesota vikings fan//travis nat- no i'm not//laughter)
WHILE POST-OPERATION MEDICATION MAY HAVE CHANGED TRAVIS' APPEARANCE FOR NOW ...
