ENTIRE VILLAGES HAVE BEEN WASHED AWAY, AND OVER 58-HUNDRED LIVES HAVE BEEN LOST TO A THE STRONGEST EARTHQUAKE THE WORLD HAS FELT IN 40 YEARS. THE EIGHT POINT NINE MEASURED QUAKE STRUCK JUST OFF THE COAST OF INDONESIA, TRIGGERING TSUNAMIS AND AFTER-SHOCKS IN AT LEAST FIVE COUNTRIES. RAM RAMGOPAL HAS A LOOK AT THE MASSIVE DEVASTATION. --REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS-- THE DAMAGE WAS MOST DRAMATIC IN SOUTH ASIA, WHERE THE TSUNAMIS STRUCK AT DAWN. FOR PEOPLE NORMALLY ACCUSTOMED TO SEEING THE SEA AT A DISTANCE, THE SIGHT OF WATER BEARING DOWN ON THE BAY OF BENGAL, WAS SURPRISING -- AND DEVASTATING. THE ISLAND OF SRI LANKA WAS IN THE DIRECT PATH OF ONE TSUNAMI. MASSIVE LOSS OF HUMAN LIFE AND PROPERTY WERE REPORTED ON BOTH THE SOUTHERN AND EASTERN COASTS.
"It came in and everything got washed away. (ONE WAVE?) Not much of a wave that's the funniest thing. The level of water came in about six feet higher than what it is now."
IN SOUTHERN INDIA, THE STATE OF TAMIL NADU WAS WORST HIT. HELICOPTERS WERE PRESSED INTO SERVICE TO RESCUE THOSE MAROONED - AND RECOVER BODIES. WITNESSES REPORTED A MASSIVE WALL OF WATER COMING INLAND, CRUSHING EVERYTHING IN ITS PATH. INDIAN NAVAL AND AIR FORCE PERSONNEL ARE BEING DEPLOYED TO ASSIST IN THE RESCUE EFFORT.
"My heart goes out to the families who have lost their families. I have been in touch with the respective governments and our fullest support and cooperation."
THE IMPACT OF THE FLOODS COULD GO WELL BEYOND THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE: APART FROM THE COST OF REBUILDING LIVES AND PROPERTY, INDIAN OFFICIALS SAY THE SALINE WATER WILL DEFINITELY ADVERSELY AFFECT CULTIVABLE LAND. SCIENTISTS HERE SAY THEY COULD DO LITTLE TO WARN PEOPLE ABOUT THE TSUNAMIS: THE WAVES WERE BARELY DISCERNIBLE ON THE OCEAN SURFACE, AND INDIAN SATELLITES TOO DID NOT CAPTURE THE RISING WATER. AND IT WAS THAT WATER THAT SWAMPED THE ISLAND ATOLLS OF THE MALDIVES, BARELY ABOVE SEA LEVEL. MALDIVIAN OFFICIALS SAY IT'S STILL NOT CLEAR WHAT THE DAMAGE IS IN THE OUTLYING ISLANDS. COMMUNICATION LINKS HAVE BEEN CUT OFF AND IT MAY BE DAYS BEFORE A CLEAR PICTURE EMERGES. RAM RAMGOPAL, CNN, NEW DELHI. ))

A Pulaski man has been arrested on charges of attempted murder of a police officer. The Pulaski County Sheriff says a deputy tried to stop a van early yesterday morning and gave chase when the driver fled. The van ran through a fence and crashed near a cemetery in rural Pulaski County. Sheriff Jim Davis says the driver got out of the van and fired a round that struck the deputy's windshield. About five rounds were exchanged before the man fled into nearby woods. The sheriff says the man turned himself in -after a state police helicopter made a few passes over the area. NO one was injured.
