An employee of the Roanoke County Social Services Department has been charged with reckless endangerment of a child, after a ten-month old was left unattended in a car for about five hours.

Officials say the employee was distracted by a family emergency, but tonight she is on leave, and a local court has ordered an investigation. [***NEWS 7 @ 6 IN MONITOR***]

Salem Police were called to the parking lot near the Salem City Courthouse complex. They were able to free the child, apparently unhurt... from the locked car. This afternoon, the boy's father, Harry Bowes, was relieved after seeing his son, but says the incident would not have happened if he had had custody of his son.

The child is now back with his foster parents after two checkups. The employee is on administrative leave. Identified as 33- year- old Amy Ellen Stone, she was charged with reckless endangerment of a child and released on bond.

Keith and Jean, Stone has worked for the department for 9 and a half years, and is described as a good employee. Social Services Director Betty McCrary says the department is concerned about the incident and regrets that it happened. Meanwhile a judge has ordered an investigation that will be conducted by Roanoke City Social Services.
