A 14 hour standoff ends with the murder of a veteran police officer in Newington, Connecticut.

Officer Peter Lavery (LAY-vuh-ree) was responding to a domestic violence call when he was taken hostage.
Authorities tried to force the suspect to surrender, but instead he killed the police officer and then took his own life.

Back in Virginia, it's a new look for New Year's in Montogmery County. Car dealers there are keeping their vehicles on the lot.

For several years, dealers like Shelor have hauled their vehicles out of the *county* to avoid paying the Merchants Tax. Many business owners claimed the tax was too high. It's assessed each year on New Year's Day on a business' inventory. But this year, the *county* cut the tax in half. David Hagan of Shelor Motor Mile told News 7 in July he would not move his cars. And from the looks of his lot this morning, it appears this dealership is keeping its vehicles right where they are.

The new year should bring new life to a Carroll County Rescue service.

Hillsville expects to get its rescue squad back within a month or so. The Carroll County Board of Supervisors shut down the squad last spring after the captain admitted to misusing an ambulance. Now a doctor with the Twin County Regional Hospital has agreed to become the squad's lifeline and act as its supervisor. The squad will have an organization meeting January 8th to elect new officers and could be up and running again by the end of next month.
