Authorities have released the names of the two people killed in a fire on New Year's Day.

The fire in an apartment on Sixth Street southwest killed 47-year-old Debra Hippensteel and 51-year-old Cleveland Haymaker.
Officials are still looking into the cause.

Nearly 90 local marines are readying for deployment after being called up to support Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Today is the first of four days the marines will use to fill out paperwork and other administrative details before leaving for training in California or North Carolina on Saturday. The group is primarily made up of young men who have never been to war or the Middle East, but the group's leaders, who have fought before - they say these young men have an eye-opening experience ahead.

It's been a deadly day for U- S soldiers in Iraq.
Military officials say five Americans were killed today in roadside bombings.
This is the deadliest day for the U-S miltary since a suicide bomber killed 14 soldiers in an attack last month.

Roanokers responded last week, sending relief supplies to tsunami victims in South Asia. Now, the group collecting that aid says it has all the food and clothing it can handle.

A court official says justices voted three-to-two to uphold the indictment.

The discovery of a person with an active case of tuberculosis has led Amherst County to call a public meeting tonight.

Health officials won't be specific about who brought the illness to the elementary school.

They're asking about fifty to sixty people who had close contact with that person to be skin-tested within the next week.

The artist who helped create Mad Magazine's mascot has died.
For more than a half century Kelly Freas (freez) produced covers for science fiction and fantasy books, in addition to some of the rock group Queen's best selling record covers.
In seven years as the main cover artist of Mad Magazine, Freas helped give Newman his gap-toothed grin.
His wife says the 82 year old artist died in his sleep Sunday at home in Los Angeles.
She tells The Associated Press, ``Life with a Mad artist was never boring.''
