Polls opened at seven o'clock and as expected voting was brisk and security tight.
In this country where some 1.8 MILLION Palestians in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jersalem are eligible to vote- it was no surprise.
More than 28-hundred ballot boxes were shipped Saturday to more than one-thousand polling stations in the West Bank and Gaza. In southern Gaza, a polling station didn't open because the ballot boxes could not be brought in by roads the Israeli army blocked weeks earlier.
The election- which is between seven candidates has Mahmoud Abbas (mahk-MOOD' ah-BAHS'), pulling away from the pack.
Abbas, the candidate of Arafat's ruling Fatah movement, is expected to win easily. He was the one of the first to cast his ballot in Ramallah.
Analysts say Abbas will need a strong showing to push forward his agenda of resuming peace talks with Israel and reforming the corruption-riddled Palestinian Authority.
Israel, for its part, said it is ready to meet with Abbas shortly after the election.
Senior officials said Israel is prepared to release Palestinian prisoners if Abbas can halt Palestinian rocket attacks launched from the Gaza Strip....))

Both Australia and the U-S have unarmed military teams helping the massive aid effort, and there are fears the conflict could hamper the effort. The rebels have been fighting a low-intensity war against Indonesian troops for more than 20 years. Indonesian forces are accused of brutality in the region and are generally hated. Both sides had said they would stop fighting after the December 26th tsunami, but clashes have broken out in recent days.

(("White Noise" (Universal Pictures) Review by: Joel Sink Do you like it when the hairs on the back of your neck stand up? If the answer is yes, you'll probably like "White Noise". Michael Keaton plays Architect Jonathan Rivers. He is married to Anna (Chandra West) a novelist and has a son from a previous marriage Mike (Nicholas Elia). Jonathan and Anna are thrilled to discover that she is pregnant. Jonathan comes home that evening to celebrate, but Anna never arrives. Jonathan is devastated, but clings to hope that Anna is still alive. Several weeks go by and Jonathan notices a man following him. He confronts the man who turns out to be sort of an electronic medium named Raymond Price (Ian McNeice). Raymond tells Jonathan that Anna is dead and she has been trying to contact him. Raymond uses a technique called EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) which is the presence of voices over television and radio in the absence of a signal (think Carol Ann in the original Poltergeist). Jonathan and another widower Sarah (Deborah Kara Unger) become friends while spending more time with Ian listening to the voices of the dead. As Jonathan's interest in EVP grows, he receives a late night call from Ian asking him to come to his home as soon as he can. Jonathan arrives to find Ian dead and his house wrecked. Jonathan also gets a warning from a psychic telling him that he should not be dabbling with the supernatural. Jonathan continues to listen to the strange voices, but begins to think that Anna is speaking to him from the grave asking him to help people who are still alive, but would perish without his help. Jonathan follows Anna's clues and finds himself in danger from something he did not expect. "White Noise" was actually pretty good. The writing was tight, the acting was good and the feel of the movie was dark and creepy. Everything was going along quite good until the last couple of minutes. The script had managed to avoid being predictable for most of the movie then makes a couple of big blunders in the last few minutes. If you like psychological thrillers you'll probably like "White Noise". Joel's take: 6 out of 10 Rated: PG-13))
