(SOT LOUIS BOCCARDI/PANEL CO-CHAIRMAN)

EVERYBODY WHO SAID THIS IS READY TO AIR SOMEHOW FELL DOWN.
Now four CBS staffers are out of a job including the storys producer Mary Mapes.
The panel-found Mapes, --quote "ignored information that cast doubt on the story."
While she insisted her source did not have an axe to grind against President Bush, there was little or no attempt to find out WHO provided CBS with the now discredited documents--documents that alleged Mr. Bush received preferential treatment to get into the Texas air national guard.
The report shows three documents were rushed on air without any sort of handwriting authentication.

(SOT : BOCCARDI)

"THERE WAS JUST SUCH A ZEST FOR THE STORY AND FOR PUTTING IT ON THE AIR RIGHT THEN BECAUSE THERE WERE OTHER PEOPLE SNIFFING AROUND AND MAYBE EVEN GETTING SOME OF THE DOCUMENTS."
The report concluded because of Ms. Mapes stellar reputation no red flags were raised. For that failure the following people have been asked to resign from CBS News....
Senior Vice President Besty West. 60 Minutes Wednesday Executive Producer Josh Howard and his right hand, Senior Broadcast Producer Mary Murphy.
The story aired in the middle of the heated presidential election, and critics questioned the timing and the motive.
