Appalachian Power recorded an all-time peak demand on the morning of December 20th, when temperatures dropped into the single digits throughout the region. Like Roanoke Gas, which is reporting no operational problems, Apco says this cold spell should be business as usual. In Downtown Roanoke, outdoor dining is now on ice, but John Brown and others aren't letting the cold weather put them out of action.

Danville police still aren't sure what happened to a man found dead in his home Sunday night.
The body of 27-year-old Jason Keith Taylor was discovered inside his home in the 200 block of North Raleigh Court around 10:30.
An autopsy has been ordered, but police are not releasing any other details.

Virginia Tech officials are finally starting to see the impact of the deadly Tsunami on its students.

Officials with the Cranwell International Center at the University say they've now been in contact with at least six students who lost family and friends. Ten other students are still waiting to hear about their families, and two students have both expressed financial worries. Nolan, the Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator, also coached with the Washington Redskins, accepted the job today then began to negotiate a contract. This is Nolan's first head coaching post. He's been a coordinator with four teams. He replaces Dennis Erickson, who was fired after posting a 9-and-23 record over two seasons. Nolan's father, Dick, coached the 49ers from 1968 to 1975, winning three division titles and reaching the N-F-C title game twice.

It was...hardly an unusual event in horse country. But this is no ordinary horse. It's a Caspian, a breed so rare it was believed to be extinct for more than a thousand years. An American woman living in Iran RE-discovered the breed 40 years ago. When Sarah Martin heard about Caspians SHE had to have one. This little filly makes her fourth.

Caspians are small horses: seven to nine hands high, so they're better suited as a child's mount. A new-born foal typically weighs about 90 pounds. Sarah Martin estimates this- -as-yet un-named horse weighed in at about 40 pounds.
