DEQ officials have approved a Bedford City plan to bring clean water back to residents affected by the city's former landfill. Approval came today in Richmond.

Construction on a public water line to the affected houses is expected to begin this spring, and groundwater sampling will continue throughout that area. A textile labeling factory in Hillsville is closing, and as a result, 160 people will lose their jobs over the next year. The state is investigating what it calls "significant ongoing incidences" of errors in the white pages of Verizon telephone books.

The State Corporation Commission has talked to Verizon about the number of errors in the telephone directories, but corrections they expected have apparently not been made. Verizon's representative in this area admits some recent phone books have contained errors and regrets any inconvenience these errors may have caused customers.

Former Virginia star Don Majokowski is about to get a huge honor from the NFl teams that drafted him in 1987 in the 10th round.
