While tree limbs and other surfaces were blanketed with snow, most area roads remained clear.

In Roanoke, crews spread salt along many city streets.

Around 6:30 this morning, crews were called to the Briar Patch restaurant on Route 29 Business in Amherst.
Fire and smoke were coming through the roof as firefighters tried to attack the blaze from the inside.
It took them more than an hour to bring things under control.

Drunk driving charges have been dropped against a man who lost his son in the accident.

Glovern Ray Phipps of Salem was due in court yesterday morning on charges of reckless driving and driving under the influence.

The Roanoke County Commonwealth's Attorney says Phipps faces no charges "at this time."
The original charges stemmed from a November accident on Thompson Memorial Boulevard.
Phipps' five-year-old son, Ryan died the next day from injuries authorities believe were sustained in the crash.
The Prosecutor says the case could go to a grand jury next month where new charges could be sought.

There's word today that F- C- C Chairman Michael Powell is stepping down.

Powell was appointed as a commissioner seven years ago and
became chairman in January, 2001.
As head of the commision, Powell helped collect some of the largest
indecency fines against U- S broadcasters.
The most notable incident was Janet Jackson's Super Bowl appearance last year.
An official says Powell plans to stay on the job for a while, but it's not clear yet if he'll wait for a successor to be named.

Two Australian air force planes were taking part in an elite display team, when their wings hit today during a training exercise.
No one was killed or injured in the collision.
But one plane caught fire and crashed to the ground.
The pilot of that plane was able to eject before the crash.
Authorities are investigating what led to the collision.
