Traveling across the News 7 viewing area has been tricky today , as the winter weather has closed roads and made many others slick. But tonight the main threat will be the high winds.
(------------)

I'm Myranda Stephens.
Let's go over to the Weather Center where Brent Watts will let us know what we can expect tonight.

The precipitation made traveling difficult for many in the region today.

Jeremy Butterfield spent a lot of the day on the road and he joins us outside the studio tonight. Jeremy, how is it right now. Myranda, it's not to bad right now but we do have some road conditions to tell folks about.

V-DOT says Interstate 81, 581, and route 220 are generally bare at the moment but may have some slick spots. Most of the secondary roads in the surrounding counties are still covered with snow and slush and two roads in Roanoke and Franklin County have been closed. State Police say Knob Road and Crowell's Gap Road will be closed until tomorrow. Rockbridge County got some of the worst of the precipitation today.
Residents there took a short but hard hit from the sleet this afternoon but by two o'clock the winter weather was all but gone.

Saturday afternoon the parking lots in Rockbridge County went from this-- to this. Downtown Lexington didn't see much foot traffic, but the regulars were out.

[SOT :00:21:55]
[IN Q=It's not the official]

((FRANK KENNEDY:IT'S NOT THE OFFICIAL MOTTO-- RAIN, SNOW, AND ALL THAT. THAT'S SOMETHING SOMEONE PUT ON THE GPO IN NEW YORK, BUT EVERYBODY THINKS IT'S THE MOTTO AND I GUESS WE HAVE TO DO IT ANYWAY.))

[OUT Q=to do it anyway.]

As the mail was delivered some students from nearby Washington and Lee were out enjoying the weather-- although one freshman from New Jersey wasn't entirely impressed.

There was some foot traffic on the sidewalks of downtown Lexington, however most of it led to some place warm.

V-Dot and city crews worked throughout the day clearing the roads to prevent as much as this-- as possible.

[IN Q=The best thing that]

((CHUCK LIONBERGER:THE BEST THING THAT YOU CAN DO WHEN DEALING WITH SNOW AND ICE ON THE ROADS IS DON'T BE ON THE ROADS. IF IT IS AT ALL POSSIBLE TO AVOID YOUR TRIP, GIVE US SOMETIME TO CLEAR THE ROADS, AND MAKE THE ROAD CONDITIONS A LITTLE BETTER, THAT'S REALLY THE BEST THING FOR YOU.))
[RUNS=:12]
[OUT Q=best thing for you.]

All and all Rockbridge County escaped what they thought would be bigger snow storm, but some residents are still expecting problems.
(///// SOT /////)
[SOT 00:24:36]
[IN Q=And then i heard]

((DAN KLUSKA:AND THEN I HEARD THAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO GET REALLY WINDY TONIGHT SO THIS IS PROBABLY GOING TO BE BLOWING ALL OVER THE PLACE. SO IT SHOULD BE A FUN NIGHT.))

[OUT Q=should be a fun night.]

[DOUBLE BOXES=Myranda/Jeremy; ]

And Myranda the sleet is over for the most part but those high winds will be picking up tonight and with the winds may come power outages and downed trees. So everyone is encouraged to stay in tonight and keep safe, and warm. Myranda.

After grabbing two ACC wins at home in the past week, today Virginia Tech hit the road for Atlanta, where Georgia Tech was a perfect 10 and oh at Alexander Memorial Coliseum this season.

The Hokies were up for the challenge. Jamon Gordon gets the friendly bounce from the iron early on with the turnaround. Tech found themselves deadlocked at 33 at halftime.
In the second half, Marquie Cooke gets hacked in the act, as the Hokies opened up a 9 point lead with under 10 to play.
Carlos Dixon scored 21 points for the visitors including this hard earned bucket that gave VT a one point lead late.

Tech survived several Yellow Jacket attempts including two off the free throw miss by Ismail Muhammad in the final seconds to pull the shocker 70 to 69.
