FRANK WILLIAMS/OHIO TRUCKER: I WAS

State and local crews spent the day

In other news,

Dr. Bruce Stewart says 25 to 30
percent of smokers have some form of
the disease.

SOT

THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT IF YOU QUIT
SMOKING BEFORE IT PROGRESS THEY CAN
STOP THE PROGRESSION. IT'S NOT
INEVITABLE THAT THEY WOULD END UP WITH
EMPHYSEMA LIKE JOHNNY CARSON DID

Stewart says one the problems --is
that you can smoke for years --before
you have any indication that you have
emphysema.

Carson had the disease for years
before he died at the age of 79.

A Bedford program offers

disabled, elderly, or low income. It's
called Bedford ride --and it's mainly
run by volunteers.

And finally in health news,

A fruit bowl and fruit cup are now on

Iraqi Candidate < ELECTION IN ALMOST 50 YEARS.

FOR MANY.. CASTING A BALLOT MEANT
CLEARING MULTIPLE CHECKPOINTS.. AND A
PAT DOWN SEARCH.

IRAQI OFFICIALS HOPE AT LEAST HALF OF
THE 14 MILLION ELIGIBLE VOTERS WILL DIP
THEIR FINGERS IN PURPLE INK TODAY- THE
SIGN THAT THEY HAVE VOTED.

(ARAFA HUSSEIN/IRAQI TEACHER)

SOT (28:54) We are real happy, very

happy to have freedom and government.

MORE THAN FIVE THOUSAND SCHOOLS AND
OTHER BUILDINGS WERE TURNED INTO
HEAVILY GUARDED POLLING CENTERS.. WITH
IRAQIS SOLDIERS OUT IN FRONT AND

U-S TROOPS STANDING READY NEARBY.

(NAT-)

INSURGENTS MADE GOOD ON THREATS TO
DISRUPT VOTING- HITTING A HANDFUL OF
POLLING STATIONS WITH MORTAR FIRE AND
DEADLY SUICIDE BOMBS.

BRIDGE: despite the violent insurgency
the vast majority of Iraqis are all for
democracy.. but it s these people in
these lineS risking their lives to take
part in new Iraq.

IRAQI OFFICIALS CAST THEIR BALLOTS
INSIDE THE HEAVILY FORTIFIED GREEN ZONE
IN BAGHDAD. OTHER CANDIDATES RUNNING
FOR ONE OF THE 275 SEATS ON THE
NATIONAL ASSEMBLY WENT TO NEIGHBORHOOD
POLLING CENTERS.

(AZIZ AL-TAIEL/IRAQI CANDIDATE
(NATIONAL CONSENSUS ALLIANCE))

(20:52) We came out with the courage,
as voters and candidates, to say no to
terrorism and we think we are paying
the price on behalf of all the citizens
of the world here in Iraq.

IN CITIES WHERE SHIITES HOLD A
MAJORITY... THERE HAS BEEN STRONG
TURNOUT. WHILE MOST SUNNI STRONGHOLDS
HAVE SEEN NO VOTERS AT ALL.. AND THAT
POOR SHOWING COULD UNDERMINE THE
CREDIBILITY OF THE NEW GOVERNMENT....

AND LEAD TO MORE VIOLENCE. CHARLIE D
