PRESENTED WITH.
Not far from the Blacks, new

The changing face of public housing in
Roanoke includes a growing emphasis on
home ownership.
JOHN BAKER/HOUSING AUTHORITY: WE'RE
LOOKING FOR MORE OPPORTUNITIES BOTH
THROUGH NEW CONSTRUCTION AND THROUGH
ACQUIRING HOMES THAT NEED TO BE
RENOVATED.
By using a lease purchase program, and
special financing the Housing Authority
is helping Roanokers like Joyce and
Leroy Dickerson achieve a dream they
once thought was out of reach.
LEROY DICKERSON: IT WAS ONE OF MY
DREAMS, BUT IT WAS ONE OF THE TIMES IN
MY LIFE THAT I THOUGHT I WASN'T GOING
TO BE ABLE TO OWN A HOME, BUT LIKE MY
WIFE SAID, THROUGH THE GRACE OF GOD AND
PRAYER THINGS CHANGE.
WHEN YOU SAW THIS SPOT YOU KNEW YOU
WANTED TO BE HERE. JOYCE DICKERSON:
THAT'S WHERE WE WANTED TO BE. RIGHT
HERE. LIKE I SAID WE COULDN'T HAVE
PICKED A BETTER SPOT.
So far a dozen homes have been
completed, and fifteen more are under
construction, in a program the housing
authority believes will benefit city
neighborhoods along with the families
who are moving into their own homes.
