(END SOT) Here in Roanoke, the school day for

most elementary schools begins promptly
at nine o'clock in the morning.

Many however feel kids should be
here much earlier in the day.

SOT FULL

LOENDA TOOMER/PARENT: I THINK IT'S
PRETTY GOOD. THEY'RE FRESH AND I
BELIEVE THEY'LL DO BETTER.

(END SOT)

Teachers agree.

Here at Preston Park for example,
SOL tests are administered as early as
possible.

SOT FULL

LOUISE DILLON/PRESTON PARK TEACHER: WE
TRY TO HAVE THE CORE SUBJECTS EARLY
WHEN THE CHILDREN A VERY VERY WIDE

But it's just the opposite for
middle school students.

Research indicates older students
may learn more if they sleep later.

SOT FULL

HALLIE PILCHER/MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT:
IT'S A LITTLE BIT EASIER TO LEARN WHEN

IT'S LATER IN THE DAY AND NOT LIKE I

So Roanoke City is considering
changing the start of school.

Not everyone thinks it's a great
idea.

SOT FULL

HOWARD RENFRO/PARENT: I THINK IT WOULD
BE INCONVIENT ON A LOT OF THE PARENTS
WHO WORK AND DRIVE THEIR KIDS TO
SCHOOL.

(END SOT)

Roanoke realizes any change will be
controversial so it held this meeting
to gain public input.

((QUICK NAT SOUND OF MEETING))

Most have concerns but no strong
opposition.

One proposal that's getting a lot of
attention is to have the elementary
schools start first, and then have the
middle and high school start later and
at the same time.

But before that can happen, many
obstacles need to be worked out,
transportation being one.

SOT FULL

LISSY MERENDA/ROANOKE CITY SCHOOLS: WE

DO HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE THE
