the night.

((NAT SOUND OF NIGHT CLEANUP))

It's a huge task. Eight pieces of
heavy equipment were brought in to do
the job.

This all for an incident that began
around 1:30 in the afternoon on the
tracks behind Blue Ridge Beverage.

SOT FULL

ALLEN WILEY/BLUE RIDGE BEVERAGE
EMPLOYEE: IT WAS LOUD THEN PLUS THE
METAL WAS TWISTING AND YOU JUST SEE

CARS JUMPING OVER TOP OF ONE ANOTHER
AND JUST DISAPPEARING.

(END SOT)

Within minutes, rescue crews had
arrived.

Their first concern? Whether
hazardous materials were involved.

SOT FULL

JENNIFER CONLEY-SEXTON/ROANOKE CO. FIRE
& RESCUE: IT'S FULL OF COAL BUT THERE
IS NO HAZARDOUS MATERIALS, NOTHING TO
WORRY ABOUT.

(END SOT)

It is unclear how much coal spilled.

We do know the Norfolk Southern
Train was heading from Bluefield to
Roanoke.

It had 147 cars, 27 of which
derailed.

Here in these pictures, you can see
the cars were scattered over a 1/4 of a
mile.

Fortunately, the derailment caused
very few problems, thanks to the area's
rural setting.

SOT FULL

JENNIFER CONLEY-SEXTON/ROANOKE CO. FIRE
& RESCUE: THERE ARE NOT ANY CLOSE
HOMES OR HOMES THAT ARE NEARBY. THERE

ARE NOT ANY STREETS THAT HAVE BEEN
CLOSED BECAUSE OF THIS OTHER THAN THIS
MAIN BARLEY STREET SO YEAH IF IT HAS TO
HAPPEN I GUESS THIS IS THE BEST IT
COULD HAPPEN.

(END SOT)

((NAT SOUND OF TRUCKS ARRIVING))

Within hours, Norfolk Southern crews
arrived to begin the cleanup.

By nightfall, some of the cars had
already been removed.

All this for something that lasted
only a few seconds.

SOT FULL

ALLEN WILEY/BLUE RIDGE BEVERAGE
EMPLOYEE: WITHIN TEN SECONDS, IT WAS
JUST CRAZY.

49-year-old Stanley Crawford.

The men had been family friends
for years.

But, during the early morning
hours of March 28th, they got into a
fight and Crawford ended up dead.

Prosecution witnesses testified
Crawford was afraid of the Gallimore
family.

The defense noted the men were
hugging and "pal"-ing around an hour
before the fight.

The prosecution wrapped up its
case yesterday afternoon.

33-year-old Gallimore faces first
degree murder charges in the death of
49-year-old Stanley Crawford.

The men had been family friends
for years.

But, during the early morning
hours of March 28th, they got into a
fight and Crawford ended up dead.

Prosecution witnesses testified
Crawford was afraid of the Gallimore
family.

The defense noted the men were
hugging and "pal"-ing around an hour
before the fight.

The prosecution wrapped up its
