dollar loan and needs to sell part of
her property to pay the bank.

goose.

A flock of more than 300 Canada
Geese calls the Smyth County town of
Saltville home.

After numerous complaints about
the birds and their droppings, town
officials decided to open a month long
hunting season to control the flock.

Now the hunt within town limits
is ruffling some feathers.

Supporters say the hunt is the
fastest option to get the flock under
the control.

They claim if hunting doesn't
work, the birds will be have to be
rounded up and slaughtered.

The final hunt of the season is
scheduled for Saturday.

GRAPHIC=Carilion Helicopter Carilion is adding a new helicopter


to provide *medevac* service in Western
Virginia.

Currently the I-77 corridor falls
into a gap between Carilion's
helicopter base in Roanoke, and bases
in far Southwest Virginia and
Charleston West Virginia.

Response time for accidents and
emergencies ranges from 30 to 50
minutes.

When the new helicopter begins

operation in early April, that time
will drop into the 10 to 20 minute
range.

The chopper will be based in the
Wythe and Smyth County area.

hoping to give their student's an
advantage in the "real world."

Yesterday the county announced it
will offer first responders training in
its high schools.

The classes will allow students
who are interested to take the class
and become certified emergency medical
technicians and firefighters, while
earning up to 12-credits for college.

The new cirriculum will be
offered starting the fall 2005.

County officials say its a
"win-win" situation.

It will bring more volunteers
into the county's volunteer-based
rescue services and it will help
students get a head-start in a career
while giving back to their community.

negatives available for public
research.

suspect wanted on several criminal
charges.

Corey Lee Walters was shot around
five o'clock yesterday on North Main
Street.

for the 26-year-old when they got
information that he was in the north
end of the city.

Walters was riding in, but Walters
reportedly shoved the driver out the
door and attempted to drive off.

He allegedly hit a Danville police
officer and that's when several OTHER
officers began firing at the vehicle.

before the law takes effect, but the
General Assembly is working to ban gay

marriage in the state.

yesterday in Richmond.

The Legislature still has to
approve it AGAIN next year before a
constitutional amendment is put to a
statewide referendum.

officials to make religous expressions
in schools and other public property
won easy approval in the House of
Delegates.

Republican sponsor Bill Carrico
of Grayson County says the bill is

different times in four and a half

years to complaints made by Desiree
Jennings against Raphael Jones.

Jennings last Friday.

Jennings' complaints, but in three of
those cases, Jennings refused to
cooperate after initially filing a
report.

Police say a detective also counseled
her on "several different occasions"
regarding her relationship with Jones.

Officials say they did everything
within their power to protect Jennings
and encourage her to pursue charges in
the court system.
