September 28 The project will not protect
Roanoke from a hundred year flood, but
representatives of the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers say it probably would have

prevented water from reaching Victory
Stadium last September.

Last night, they also told
members of the Victory Stadium
Committee that the facility could be
flood-proofed, but that it's unclear
how much that would cost, and whether
federal funding would be available.

The 10-mile flood control project will
be built in phases and is expected to
cost about 65-million dollars.

Neither is covered under national
flood insurance.

The city pays between 8 and 10
thousand dollars a year for flood
insurance on Victory Stadium- and
roughly 3-thousand for the Armory.

Much of the damage at Victory
stadium was electrical.

A large part of the expense also
went for cleanup.
