(END SOT) Pope John Paul the Second leaving the
hospital .. Loaded into the
Popemobile behind a plastic screen put
up to protect him from the cold,
his departure seemed designed to show
that he was again able to carry
out at least some of his papal duties.
Clearly illuminated for all to see, the
Pope's gaze seemed to reflect
the ordeal he'd been through and the
further toll it has taken on his
health. At several points he managed a
feeble wave.
The Vatican says the Pope will consult
with his private physician as to
what sort of a schedule his can
undertake now. But this is the lent
period on the Christian calendar, one
he normally spends in quiet
reflection, now it seems he will spend
it in recuperation as well. (15
secs)
John Paul returned to a Vatican once
more very concerned with his health
and with his ability to lead the
Catholic Church. MP CBS News Rome.
