OQ=Joe Dashiell News 7 Roanoke < (END SOT) Roanoke, and a call for innovative

entries, organizers of the c2c home
design and construction competition
caught the attention of architecture
students and professionals around the
world.

More than 600 submitted designs, and
during the last month Roanokers turned
out in surprising numbers to view the
winners and other promising concepts.

But Roanoke architect Gregg Lewis says
that was just the opening act.

GREGG LEWIS/ROANOKE ARCHITECT: THE NEXT
STEP IS WORKING VERY DELIBERATELY BOTH
WITH THE LOCAL CONSTRUCTION COMMUNITY
AND THE DESIGNERS WHO'VE SUBMITTED
DESIGNS TO THIS COMPETITION AND FIND A
WAY TO DEVELOP THESE DESIGNS

APPROPRIATELY, BOTH FROM A COST
STANDPOINT AND IN TERMS OF THEIR
APPROPRIATENESS FOR SOME OF THE GIVEN
NEIGHBORHOODS THAT WE'RE WORKING IN.

As the exhibit at the Art Museum of
Western Virginia was winding down,
local contractor Walt Derey accepted
Lewis' invitation to take a closer
look.

Derey says many of the concepts
embodied by the term "green
architecture" will eventually be
mandated, so it pays to keep an open
mind.

WALT DEREY/LOCAL CONTRACTOR: SOMETIMES
YOU KIND OF HAVE TO BE PUSHED THERE,
HAVE TO SEE THINGS BEFORE YOU CAN START
ACCEPTING EM AND I THINK IT'S GOOD TO
COME OUT AND LOOK AT DIFFERENT THINGS
LIKE THIS. AND THEN YOU KNOW MIGHT TAKE
SOMETHING FROM ONE PROJECT AND PUT IT
TO ANOTHER PROJECT AND LEARN. I THINK
THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT.

GREGG LEWIS: THE COMMUNITY HAS SHOWN A
TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF INTEREST IN THIS.
ALMOST FROM THE MOMENT WE ANNOUNCED IT
LOCALLY BACK IN AUGUST, AND I HAVE VERY
HIGH HOPES AND HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR
HOW THIS WILL IMPACT THE FUTURE OF

HOUSING AND THE FUTURE OF DEVELOPMENT
IN OUR REGION.

The first indications could come as
early as May, when construction is
expected to begin on the first of
several c2c homes.
