Harris says the city doesn't know if it
would meet requirements for state
funding, but he says officials would be
open to considering a downtown location
adjacent to the currently city jail, or
other sites presently under
consideration.
The county is moving forward with a
site near Dixie Caverns and Supervisors
Chairman Mike Altizer says the city's
interest shouldn't change that .

sheriff's deputy is in jail, facing
federal drug distribution charges.
Sheriff Wilson Staples says
34-year-old Eric S. Lee of Appomattox
was arrested last week following an
investigation by local, state and
federal authorities.
Lee is charged with possession
with intent to distribute more than 500
grams of cocaine.
He's in federal custody awaiting a
bond hearing.

charges in circuit court in connection
to a traffic accident which authorities
say resulted in the death of his son.

November 2004 Glovern Ray Phipps was arrested
Friday and charged with driving under
the influence and involuntary
manslaughter.
Phipps was indicted by the grand
jury at the beginning of the month
after charges were dropped last month.
Charges stem from a November
accident on Thompson Memorial
Boulevard.
Phipps' five-year-old son, Ryan
died the next day from injuries
authorities believe were sustained in
the crash.
Glovern Phipps is due back in
court on March 1st.

Kroger will open its newest
grocery store tomorrow morning at Cave
Spring Corner- right down the way from
its old store.
Officials say the old store will
close, and then the new store will open
a moment later.
The new 60-thousand square foot
facility is environmentally friendly.
According to the company, it will
reduce energy use by one-third.
Kroger says it will do that with
the store's 45-skylights and
timed-lights in the freezer and storage
areas.
Another Kroger store is located
about a mile away-on the other side of
419, but a company spokesperson says
research shows people want stores in
their "own neighborhoods" and don't
want to cross 419 to shop.

The men visited Roanoke schools talking
to students about their experiences and
struggles as members of the all-black
fighter squadron during World War Two.
They hope by sharing their stories,
students will gain a deeper
appreciation of the sacrifices the men
made.

ENG#=1 yesterday, but he'll be losing his car
for a year.

He probably won't mind a bit,
though, because his Number 24 Chevy is
just going on display at Daytona USA.
The car that carried him to his
third Daytona win will be stay inside
Victory Lane for the next year.
Gordon will get the ride back
next February.
Gordon and his crew also
continued another Daytona tradition by
signing the car.
He says he and his crew went into
the Daytona 500, hoping that this would
happen.
