Hundreds of people of all ages
and abilities gave it their best effort
on Sunday, but organizers say the games
are almost a side note to what
tournaments like this one actually give
the players.
NANCY MOREHOUSE:THEY TRAVEL TOGETHER
THEY GO TO OTHER TOURNAMENTS TOGETHER.
SOME OF OUR TEAMS HAVE BEEN TOGETHER
FOR MAYBE EIGHT OR NINE YEARS NOW SO
THEY HAVE DEVELOPED A LOT OF
FRIENDSHIPS.
Bryan Mosby played in the
tournament and read the Special
Olympics Oath during the opening
ceremonies.
Mosby's played in the basketball
tournament for more than four years
BRYAN MOSBY:WE'RE ALL FRIENDS AND WE
TRY TO HELP EACHOTHER AND WE COME OUT
HERE AND WE JUST HAVE A LOT OF FUN
PLAYING AND WE HOPE WE WIN, BUT IF WE
DON'T WIN WERE JUST GOING TO TRY AND DO
OUR BEST IN THE ATTEMPT TO WIN.
Along with the team bond that
develops on the hardwood, the games
also bring flamilies closer together.
Organizers say there is something
about the game that brings out
abilities in the players that friends
and family members didn't expect to be
there.
JUSTIN MOSBY:IN GENERAL SOMETIMES THERE
IS AN UNDERESTIMATION OF WHAT THEIR
ABILITIES ARE. YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO
DO YOUR BILLS, LIVE ON YOUR OWN, OR
LISTEN TO WHAT YOUR MOM TELLS YOU TO
DO, BUT YOU COME OUT HERE AND YOU MAKE
FRIENDS AND BE A PART OF A TEAM OR BE A
TEAM CAPTAIN.
