Even if the Appalachian Region is
among those consolidated, the Red Cross
will presumably remain the primary
collection point and provider of blood
in southwestern Virginia.

Management is trying to contain
costs. Consider this memo to employees
from Vice President Tom Angle at
Regional Headquarters in Johnstown,
Pennsylvania.

"In recent years," he writes "we
have experienced a steady erosion of
our customer's confidence." Angle goes
on to say that has enabled "numerous
competitors to lure donor, sponsor and
hospital customers away from the Red
Cross."

The Red Cross declined our
requests for further information or
explanation, providing only a terse
e-mail statement saying that was "an
internal staff memo and was not meant
for public release."

As for competition, the Red Cross
has only one: American Blood Centers
competed with the Red Cross in Roanoke
for a year and a half hoping to become
the sole supplier to hospitals in this
area. When that didn't happen Virginia
Blood Services pulled out of Roanoke in
October, 2000.

A pint of blood goes for about
$200 a pint. Though they're both
non-profit agencies, they each sell the
blood you donate to cover their costs.

Andrew Hart takes the inbounds

Lancers vs. Colonels The facility on Ferncliff was :00 packed and smoking inside - the
Colonels were just as hot.

With time running out in the
third period, Cory Jones throw up a
missile from halfcourt and it will find
the mark for a long distance three

Amherst was, as well.

The Lancers would hang right with
Fleming, and Jonathan Rose fires

the no-look pass to Andrew Ure. He
will get the fingeroll to go for
Amherst.
*CG final Amherst Co.

Cavaliers vs. Titans The Titans had to play their :00 first game without injured star Emery
Wallace, who blew out her knee in the
district championship game last Friday.

Hidden Valley would throw on the
pressure defense as Allison Roney gets
the steal and the nice outlet to Maria
Migliarese - who drops in an easy two
pointer.

But the Cavs would take advantage
of Wallace's absence in the paint as
Rachel Price gets wide open in the low
post and drops in a bucket in the first
half.

Then watch Colby Neighbors do the
same thing as the visiting Cavs keep it
tight to the finish.
*CG final Jefferson Forest
44 But the Titans would get this Hidden Valley three from Rebecca Danahy and the game 45 winner from Elizabeth Shaw to win it
Region Three Quarterfinals 45-to-44.

Cavaliers vs. Knights The visitors from the Dogwood :00 district made the trek up from central
Virginia, but coach Larry Davis would
fight an uphill battle in this one.

Lord Botetourt's Brittany Rogers
launches the rock from three point
land. It won't go, but Nicci Moats is
there for the rebound and the putback
as the Cavs begin to build their lead.

The Knights would only score a
handful of buckets all night long.
Lashae Anderson finds Germany Middleton
running the baseline. The bucket gets
Buckingham on the board.
*CG final Buckingham
15 But they would only score a total
Lord Botetourt of 15, as the Cavs break allows Ashley 88 McAdams to score. Lord Botetourt beats Region Three Quarterfinals Buckingham 88-to-15.
