"it really is a miracle."

ANNIKA WAS BORN JUST DAYS AGO. AND
ALREADY, SHE'S BEEN

POKED-AND-PRODDED BY THE MEDICAL
SYSTEM.

NOW... THAT'S NOT AS BAD AS IT SOUNDS.

WHEN ANNIKA WAS BORN, SHE HAD A ROUTINE
BLOOD TEST TO CHECK FOR A WHOLE

HOST OF POTENTIAL GENETIC DISEASES.

MOST PARENTS DON'T EVEN REALIZE THEIR
CHILDREN HAVE HAD THESE TESTS.

(SOT-Dr. Palmo Pasquariello/"Global

Pediatrics")

"we've identified a couple of kids in
our practice that turned out to

have a complete absence of the thyroid
gland which, if not picked up by

newborn screening, would present later
on with devastating with

devastating and often irreversible
clinical symptoms."

NOW A FEDERAL ADVISORY GROUP PLANS TO
RECOMMEND ALL NEWBORNS BE SCREENED

FOR 29 RARE MEDICAL CONDITIONS.

WHAT THESE TESTS DO IS LOOK FOR DEFECTS
IN A CHILD'S GENES.

STATES DIFFER ON THE NUMBER OF TESTS
THEY ROUTINELY PEFORM.

(SOT-Dr. Palmo Pasquariello/"Global

Pediatrics")

"I think we should take the approach
that we should do everything that

we can to identify whatever we're able
to identify."

IT SOUNDS STRAIGHTFORWARD. BUT NOT
EVERYONE AGREES.

(STANDUP: Dr. David Marks/CBS NEWS/New
York, NY)

The advice is controversial for 2 main
reasons. First, a positive test

does not guarantee a child will get
sick. Critics say this may make

some parents worry for no reason.
Second, there's no cure for some of

these condition.

(SOT-Dr. Vamil Divan/Annika's Dad)

"it makes you wonder, do you even want
to test for it, or do you find

about it when it's time to find out
about it."

ANNIKA'S TESTS CAME OUT NORMAL. HER
DAD CAN UNDERSTAND THE CONTROVERSY.

BUT IN HIS VIEW, INCOMPLETE INFORMATION
IS BETTER THAN NONE AT ALL.
