GRAPHIC=News 7 Mornin' A close vote will keep the regional
ENG#=1 jail project moving forward in Roanoke
County.
Last night, the board of supervisors
voted three to two to submit the
current proposal to the state.
Joe Dashiell has more on a meeting that
brought more criticism of county
leaders.

ADMINISTRATION. THEY'RE A ONE WAY
STREET. SHOVE IT DOWN THE CITIZENS'
THROAT.
Most of the citizens who spoke shared
J.C. Whitlock's view, that the county
is moving forward on the Higginbotham
property without fully investigating
all of the alternatives, and without
giving the public adequate input.
BUTCH CHURCH: BY ANY STRETCH OF THE
IMAGINATION, WE HAVEN'T BEEN IN FULL
DISCLOSURE... AND THAT LADIES AND
GENTLEMEN IS A FACT.
But county officials argued they are
doing their best to minimize the impact
, and other board members said rising
costs are a compelling reason to move
forward.
RICHARD FLORA: WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY
TO CHANGE SITES. WE HAVE THE
OPPORTUNITY TO ADD PARTNERS. BUT TO
DELAY WOULD BE LIKE SHOOTING CRAPS WITH
ROANOKE COUNTY TAXPAYERS' MONEY, AND
I'M NOT PREPARED TO DO THAT.
The regional jail proposal now goes to
the state, but with many more steps in
the process, the controversy is likely
to continue as well.

Walgreens wants to build a store
on this land on Langhorne Road ... but
last fall, city council refused to
change its land-use map to accomodate
the project.
Last night, council voted to
rescind that decision .. but it's still
waiting on a study of the area before
it gives Walgreens the go-ahead.
The property owners say they have
no choice now but to put the land and
the apartment complex on the market.
