from a year-long, 15- thousand mile
bicycle trip that took him to six
continents and 40 foreign countries.

It was that journey, he says, that

planted the seeds for another.

RANDAL JOHNSON: I GOT TO THINKING ABOUT
IT AND I CAME HOME THREE YEARS AGO AND
TOLD MY WIFE RUTH THAT I'D LIKE TO SEE
THE WORLD FROM SEA LEVEL AND TO MY
SURPRIZE SHE SAID SHE WOULD TOO.

Since then, they have been educating
themselves, preparing for a trip they
hope will begin next summer. They've
travelled to a shipyard in China,
placed an order for a 48 foot
ocean-going trawler. And early next
month Johnson will join the crew of a
similar vessel for a two month cruise
across the Pacific.

NAT SOUND OF RANDAL TRACING TRIP ON
GLOBE:

From the shipyard in Zhuhai China, the
trawler will head to Hong Kong for
provisions. From Hong Kong the crew
will set sail for the Phillipines, the
island of Palau where the latest
instalment of Survivor was shot,
through the MarshallIslands to Hawaii,
and then on to Seattle.

RANDAL JOHNSON: I FEEL EXTREMELY
EXCITED, SOMEWHAT LEERY. I HAD TOLD MY
WIFE AFTER THE BIKE TRIP I WOULDN'T GO
OFF AND LEAVE HER NO MORE, BUT BOTH OF

US REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS TRIP
AND HOW MUCH I CAN GAIN. I CAN NOT
AFFORD TO BUY THE TRAINING I WILL GET
ON THIS TWO MONTH VOYAGE ACROSS THE

Family and friends, and employees at
his business Roanoke Wreck Repair have
been supportive. He's told them he'll
back in a couple of months with a new
