Pope John Paul is said to be
breathing well-- a day after
undergoing a tracheotomy at a Rome
hospital.

The Vatican is also rejecting earlier

reports that the pontiff had been
hooked up to a respirator, saying he
didn't need any "assisted breathing" at
any point.

Pope John Paul slept well, had a good

says the Vaticanand speculation that
the Pontiff is suffering from

pneumonia is just wrong.

sot: Joaquin Navaarro-Valls/Vatican

Spokesman

THERE IS NOT NOW, NOR WAS THERE EVER
ANY BRONCHI-PULMINARY INFECTION.

The spokesman also said the
tracheotomy...cutting a small hole in
the

Pope's throat for him to breathe -- was
NOT an emergency procedure.

The Pope is forbidden to speak while
his larynx heals, but Vatican

watchers say there should be no mistake

who's still in charge:

SOT: Fr. John Wauck/Vatican analyst:

"I think we are becoming used to the
Pope speaking less and less over

the years and in a certain sense I
think we've been prepared for this.

(d'agata standup bridge)

And while the Pope recovers...his sense
of humor is still intact....

after his tracheotomy he wrote down,
jokingly "why have you done this to

me?"

Nearby, at St Peter's Square

BELLS.

Worshippers gathering outside the
Vatican find themselves praying, once

again, for the well being of the man
many supporters call a "living

saint."

Felix Macharo/tourist

"I feel sad the man is sick, I feel
sad."

Overnight, vigils took place inside
the chapel at the hospital,

worshippers joining millions of
Catholics around the world in prayer
for

the Pope's well-being.

But as they pray...... even some of the
most faithful - are questioning

- like never before - whether it is
time for the Holy father to step

down.....something the Pontiff has
always said he will not consider.
