said 34-year-old Jerry Wayne Ruley had
control of the gun when it went off --
taking his life. But today, State
Police say there was still a struggle
going on between Ruley and sheriff's
deputies when the the gunshot struck
Ruley in the neck.
Other accounts remain consistent:
A Buena Vista Sheriff's deputy was
bringing Ruley to the Rockbridge County
jail. Ruley was able to grab the
deputy's service pistol despite being
handcuffed.
That's when the struggle began -- now
involving other sheriff's deputies --
but somewhere in that struggle, the
service pistol went off.
The Buena Vista Sheriff's deputy who
took Ruley in is on administrative
