on the ground in central Virginia ...
but it's been a fairly quiet day for
travelers there.

So when an inmate tried to get a
Buena Vista Sheriff's Deputy's gun away
from him Friday, it may have caught the
attention of the officer in the control
center.
But the first indication anyone
had there was a problem came from
outside.

Sheriff Bob Day happened to be
just inside the door, and was among the
first to respond.
He doesn't want to discuss on the
record how it happened, because the
case is now the subject of a state
police investigation. But his
department stands by its initial
account that Jerry Wayne Ruley had the
gun when it went off killing him.
It's hard to discern details from
the black and white monitors in the
control room. They might not have
revealed much even if the incident had
been captured on tape.
Officer Randy Chittum- -the
officer who'd been assigned to
transport the suspect is actually a
full-time Buena Vista Police officer,
just recently named an Investigator.
His boss speaks highly of him.

contributing to the delinquency of a
minor, grand larceny and credit card
theft.

ENG#=2 of a woman who was found outside a
northeast Roanoke
home this morning.
They do NOT suspect foul play, and
say it appears likely she died from
natural causes.

Maplelawn Avenue, after a meter reader
discovered the woman's body on a
covered porch in the back of the house.
Investigators say there was no
evidence of a break-in, nothing visible
at the scene to indicate anything other

Police are not identifying the woman
until relatives are notified. The
medical examiner will conduct an
autopsy.

Roanoke police are investigating a
break-in over the weekend at one of
their neighborhood offices- along with
breakins at three churches.

responsible for the burglary at the
department's southeast office, and at
three nearby churches.
The burglars stole a variety of
items from Belmont Baptist, Foursquare
Evangelical and Metropolitan Community.

Julian Hirst served as town manager in
Pearisburg and Pulaski and city manager
in Martinsville before coming to
Roanoke. He was Roanoke's chief
executive from October 1965 until
December 1972.
Hirst was city manager of Norfolk for
eleven years, but in 1995 he told the
Norfolk Virginian Pilot he counted the
Roanoke Civic Center among his biggest
accomplishments in government.
Julian Hirst was 83 years old.

Bart Bellairs has in effect, been
fired.

:00 While Bellairs will no longer
coach basketball for VMI, the
winningest coach in school history has
been asked to stay on and work in the
promotions and marketing areas within
the athletic department.
Bellairs led the VMI hoopsters
for 11 seasons and had 116 wins and 191
losses, but the Keydets haven't had a
winning season since the 1997-98
campaign.
In March of 1996, he and then
head football coach Bill Stewart inked
longterm contracts with the school, and
then in February of 1998, Bellairs was
given a new 10 years contract
extension. He is still under contract
through 2011.
This season the Keydets were just
9 and 18 overall and only 3 and 13 in
the Big South - plus they failed to
qualify for the conference's postseason
tournament.
Athletic director Donny White
said while it was a tough decision, it
was simply time for new leadership and
a new direction.
A search for his successor will
begin immediately.

ENG#=2 been called up to the NBA.

:00 Cory Alexander, the starting
point guard and floor general of the
team, has been signed by the Charlotte
Bobcats.
Cory is the the third callup from
the NBDL in the past seven days and all
have been from the Dazzle. Alexander
has played in and started 32 games for
Roanoke this season. He is third in the
league in scoring at 16 points per
game.
Cory is a a six-year veteran of
NBA play. The UVa grad and Waynesboro
native was selected by the San Antonio
Spurs in the first round of the 1995
NBA Draft.

major league baseball. The Nationals
will play in RFK Stadium in 2005 before
moving into a new park on the Anacostia
River next season. And the Nats hope
to give the faithful plenty to cheer
about.
