Staley received first, second and
third degree burns to approximately
50-percent of his body after an
accident at 'Chemical and Solvents,
Inc.' in Roanoke.

members it appears there was a 'flash
fire', then 'explosion' in a mixing
unit.

Staley's parents say when crews
arrived on the scene this morning
-rescue personnel held off transporting
him.

Valley View Surveillance Surveillance video shows the
woman walking to her car when the
pick-up knocked her down. The driver
grabbed her purse in the process.


Roanoke Police highlighted the
video where the woman was hit and where
she landed.

She was dragged several feet but
did not suffer any serious injuries.

The driver of the pick-up truck
is described as a white man in his
twenties, driving a gray or light blue
Nissan pick-up with a North Carolina
license plate, P-T-F- -6612.

On a diet of milkshakes--Fossett
piloted his homebuilt flying machine
25-thousand miles crossing over Africa,
the Middle East, India and China

His great aerial adventure began Monday
night when he took off from Salina,
Kansas in his GlobalFlyer

Traveling at an average speed of less
than 290 miles an hour the tiny
jet--was basically a flying gas
tank....filled with 18-thousand pounds
of fuel.

But it was a problem with the fuel
system that almost doomed the flight.

Mission control was afraid Fossett had
burned too much gas to make it back to
Kansas and would be forced to land in
Hawaii.

But strong tail winds allowed the plane
to conserve fuel and keep going.

"WELL YES THE JET STREAM HAS BEEN
EXTRAORDINARY

IT HAS ALLOWED ME TO MAKE UP SOME
TIME."

Fossett was tested with another major

obstacle--fatigue--he never slept--he
couldn't--but in the end adrenaline
kicked in.

Fosset was already the first person to
fly around the world slone in a
balloon---now with both records---is

space next?

It is the final frontier, but an
astronaut named Glenn beat him to
it----but Fossett may come up with

something...he always does.

A cable snapped- -one that was

scaffolding they relied on to keep them
in place- -horizontally.

L-A firefighters had to break a
window to reach the stranded workers.

The two men had been saved from
sudden death by safety harnesses- -when

hang around a while for the rescue was
complete.
