residents and officials think there was
a major gas leak, that wasn't the case.

JUST LIKE WHAT THEY SAY THEY PUT IN THE
NATURAL GAS SO THAT YOU SMELL IT IF
THERE IS A LEAK. I HAD SMELLED IT
BEFORE SO I KNEW IT WAS A GAS SMELL,
BUT DIDN'T KNOW WHERE IT WAS COMING
FROM.

EGG SMELL. IT'S KIND OF A PUNGENT SMELL
AND IT'S SOMETHING YOU REMEMBER IF YOU
HAVE SMELLED IT ONCE.

The smell near Virginia Western
was easily recognized by fire crews and
residents as natural gas.

But where was the leak?

The gas company reported no drop
in pressure, and emergency crews
couldn't find a busted line.

That's because there wasn't one.

The foul smell was Mercaptan, the
odorant that is added to natural gas to
give it a smell.

JOE COYLE:I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT
MERCAPTAN IS SO STRONG THAT IF YOU JUST
HAD A RAG THAT WAS DIPPED IN IT AND YOU
SET IT IN THIS PARKING LOT YOU WOULD BE
ABLE TO SMELL IT IN THIS WHOLE AREA, SO
IT IS A VERY STRONG, VERY POTENT
SUBSTANCE.

Crews tracked down the smell to
the Cycle Systems Recycling facility.

Officials say a container that
held mercaptan was crushed during
recycling.

NON-TOXIC GAS AND POSES NO THREAT TO
RESIDENTS.

THE BAD NEWS IS, THAT ROTTEN EGG

GRAPHIC=Fatal Shooting Police in Danville have made an

ENG#=None arrest in a murder that occured earlier

today.

This morning, officers found 37
year old Derwin Oneal Drumgold
suffering from a gunshot wound in his
home on Madison Street.

Drumgold was pronounced dead shortly
after he was taken to the hospital.

Tonight authorities arrested 28
year old Robert Lee Glass Jr of
Greensboro, North Carolina and charged
him with the murder.

Authorities have not said what led
them to Glass. He is being held in the
Danville City Jail without bond.

Roanoke this afternoon. The pellets
quickly melted as the temperatures here
at the surface were above freezing.
Most just saw a quick shower or two.

A few hometowns had temperatures
cold enough to support snowfall. That
was the case in Amherst County. Jerry
Coffey picked up about an inch of fresh
snowfall today.

But that's nothing compared to
the foot of snow that Snowshoe Ski
Resort in West Virginia has gotten and
that's just since yesterday afternoon.

ENG#=1 today for the murdered husband of a

federal judge.

Hundreds of mourners attended the
service for Michael Lefkow LEF'-koh.

His wife, Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow,
discovered his body and the body of her
89-year-old mother when she returned
home Monday.

They had been shot multiple times.

A chaplain and longtime family friend
called the victims innocent bystanders
and their killers petty thugs.

Funeral services for the judge's mother
are expected to take place in Denver.

The F-B-I says it does NOT have any
suspects.

but the homecoming of italian
journalist Giuliana Sgrena was filled
with hurt and heartache. just as she
was released from militant kidnappers,
she was shot by u-s troops.

sgrena was taken at gunpoint in iraq
early last monththis was her in a video

pleading for her life. sgrena's captors
released her friday and she on her way
to the baghdad airport when her car
came under fire by u-s troops at a
coalition checkpoint. the italian agent
who negotiated her released, nicola
calipari, reportedly shielded sgrena
with his body.

sgrena was hit by shrapnel in the

sgrena's car only after it would not
slow down at the checkpoint. soldiers
claim they repeatedly tried to warn the
driver to stop. from her hospital bed,
sgrena told reporters her car was not
speeding and the editor at the
newspaper she works for called the
shooting a killing, not a mistake in
communications.

ENG#=2 convicted of molesting young boys has

died in prison.

2002 The state department of
corrections confirmed that Mario Tony
*Leyva* died Thursday afternoon at the
*Powhatan* Correctional Center.

Authorities say it appeared he
died of natural causes, but an autopsy
will be performed to be certain.

Leyva was convicted in 1988.

He served more than a decade in
prison before being released on parole
and returning to Roanoke in 2002.

He violated that parole by
moving to Puerto Rico, where locals
turned him in a few weeks later.

He was returned to prison in the
U-S and died there Thursday afternoon.
