ENG=4 morning with calls about a gas leak in

Roanoke.

As it turns out, residents were
right to assume the odor smelled like
natural gas -- but they didn't have to
worry about any danger.

smelling this morning?

Myranda, it was that rotten egg
smell that is added to natural gas to
give it an odor.

JUST LIKE WHAT THEY SAY THEY PUT IN THE
NATURAL GAS SO THAT YOU SMELL IT IF
THERE IS A LEAK. I HAD SMELLED IT
BEFORE SO I KNEW IT WAS A GAS SMELL,
BUT DIDN'T KNOW WHERE IT WAS COMING
FROM.

EGG SMELL. IT'S KIND OF A PUNGENT SMELL
AND IT'S SOMETHING YOU REMEMBER IF YOU
HAVE SMELLED IT ONCE.

The smell near Virginia Western
was easily recognized by fire crews and
residents as natural gas.

But where was the leak?

The gas company reported no drop
in pressure, and emergency crews
couldn't find a busted line.

That's because there wasn't one.

The foul smell was Mercaptan, the
odorant that is added to natural gas to
give it a smell.

JOE COYLE:I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT
MERCAPTAN IS SO STRONG THAT IF YOU JUST
HAD A RAG THAT WAS DIPPED IN IT AND YOU
SET IT IN THIS PARKING LOT YOU WOULD BE
ABLE TO SMELL IT IN THIS WHOLE AREA, SO
IT IS A VERY STRONG, VERY POTENT
SUBSTANCE.

Crews tracked down the smell to
the Cycle Systems Recycling facility.

Officials say a container that
held mercaptan was slightly opened at
the recycling plant, releasing the odor
into the air.

gas and poses no threat to residents.

ENG#=1 transported boys across state lines for

prostitution has died in prison.

2002 The state department of
corrections confirmed that Mario Tony
*Leyva* died Thursday afternoon at the
*Powhatan* Correctional Center.

Authorities say it appeared he
died of natural causes, but an autopsy
will be performed to be certain.

Leyva was convicted of molesting
young boys back in 1988.

He served more than a decade in
prison before being released on parole
and returning to Roanoke in 2002.

He violated that parole by
moving to Puerto Rico, where locals
turned him in a few weeks later.

He was returned to prison in the
U-S and died there Thursday afternoon.

Gary Bowman says police still drive
down his street in Stoneville, North
Carolina and pause in front of his
home.

Bowman was the only person named as
a person of interest in the 2002
murders of Michael, Mary and Jennifer
Short.

He has never been charged in the
crime and denies having anything to do
with the killings.

Bowman had lived in a trailer
about a mile from where Jennifer's
remains were found. The day after the
killings he left for Canada.

Officals say they were called to a home
in the 500-block of Madison Street.

Responding officers found a man inside
with a gunshot wound to the chest.

He was pronounced dead shortly after he
was taken to the hospital.

Police are still investigating the
death.

His name has not been released pending
the notification of his family.

shipped Coles back to his former
team--the New York Jets.

He had just one TD catch though, and

In return for Coles, the Skins
pick up the speedy Santana Moss. Moss
