A tractor trailer accident near mile
marker 39 has shut down one southbound
lane in Smyth County.

ENG#=3 has died in prison.

2002 The state department of
corrections confirmed that Mario Tony
Leyva died Thursday afternoon at the
Powhatan Correctional Center near
Richmond.
Authorities say it appeared he
died of natural causes, but an autopsy
will be performed to be certain.
Leyva was convicted of molesting
young boys back in 1988.
He served more than a decade in
prison before being released on parole
and returning to Roanoke in 2002.
He violated that parole by
moving to Puerto Rico, where locals
turned him in a few weeks later.
He was returned to prison in the
U-S and died there Thursday afternoon.

Baptist Church in Salem is suspicious.
For Interim Pastor Bill Kendrick,
it was not quite what he expected on
his first day at work.
Kendrick reported for his first
day yesterday morning and was greeted
in the church parking lot with the
smell of smoke and a kitchen that was
nearly destroyed.

with more than the usual stress that
comes with a new job.
Around seven-thirty yesterday
this morning a church member called the
Salem fire department after seeing
smoke in the church.

Firefighters traced the source of
the fire to a burning kitchen, and were
quick to put it out.
Kendrick says if the fire had
burned through the kitchen's ceiling,
it may have spread to the church's
sanctuary above.

guns on two men who resisted arrest.
The incident happened when a Danville
Police officer tried to arrest Joshua
Lee Crihfield for being drunk in
public.
Officials say another man, Richard
Edward Breitweiser intervened and
became confrontational.
The two men ignored the officers
warnings and started a scuffle.
Neither showed any sign of cooperating
with the officers, so officials used a
taser to subdue them.
No medical attention was required.

men they believe robbed the Domino's
Pizza on Riverside Drive early this
morning.
An employee told police that two
masked men carrying semi-automatic guns
ordered employees around then left with
an undisclosed amount of money.
Officials say the two men left on
foot.

abducted. Her remains were found much
later in Rockingham County, North
Carolina.
Rockingham resident Gary Bowman
became a person of interest to
investigators and the media.
His image- -and a $29,000 reward-
-were widely disseminated.
In October, 2003, Timothy Fennon
Sampson met with investigators,
claiming he was casing the Short's
neighborhood for places to burglarize
when he heard shots and saw a man who
looked like Abraham Lincoln carrying a
lifeless child from the Short's home

The U-S Attorney declined to say
whether Bowman continues to be "of
interest" to investigators, but it's

Henry County authorities went to CANADA
to track down Bowman.

2002 The state department of
corrections confirmed that Mario Tony
Leyva died Thursday afternoon at the
Powhatan Correctional Center near
Richmond.
Authorities say it appears he
died of natural causes, but an autopsy
will be performed to be certain.
Leyva was convicted of molesting
young boys at revivals back in 1988.
He served more than a decade in
prison before being released on parole
and returning to Roanoke in 2002.
He violated that parole by
moving to Puerto Rico, where locals
turned him in a few weeks later.
He was returned to prison in the
U-S and died there Thursday afternoon.

For Interim Pastor Bill Kendrick,
it was not quite what he expected on
his first day at work.
Kendrick reported for his first
day yesterday morning and was greeted
in the church parking lot with the
smell of smoke and a kitchen that was
nearly destroyed.

An employee told police that two

driver of the truck was found dead
hours later.

Bridge officials say a motorist

Howard Hannah of Salisbury floating

dozens of dolphins that are beaching on
the coast.

Out of the 60-plus rough-tooth
dolphins that have been found, 19 have
been euthanized or have died.
Meanwhile, the remaining dolphins are
being treated for dehydration and have
been moved to a rehabilitation center.
Rough-tooth dolphins are rarely seen
and are normally found in far offshore
places like the Atlantic Ocean and the
Gulf of Mexico. The reason why they are
beaching is still unknown.

"The Pacifier" is a good,
old-fashioned, movie that will
entertain the
kids and be fun for the grown-ups too.
Vin Diesel plays Navy Seal, Shane
Wolfe. Shane is injured in an
unsuccessful attempt to rescue
scientist Howard Plummer (Tate Donovan)
from kidnappers. After he recovers,
Shane is assigned to protect
Plummers family from the same people
who kidnapped him. Mom (Faith
Ford) has to leave for Switzerland, the
babysitter (Carol Kane) quits
and Shane has to take care of all five
kids by himself. The kids are
rebellious and withdrawn so Shane has
to draw them out while dealing
with his own demons. Shane's influence
on the kids helps them deal with
their problems and there is a great
twist at the end when everyone
works as a team to battle the people
who kidnapped the kids dad.
This movie was a blast! Vin Diesel
carries this off with a great sense
of humor and charm. The actors who play
the kids were great too. For
me, Morgan York as Lulu was the real
charmer. There are a couple of
scenes with York and Diesel that were
so funny and yet, very touching.
Carol Kane as the dark, sarcastic
housekeeper is a riot! The only
problem is that she isn't around for
nearly long enough. There are some
decent action scenes and enough laughs
to keep everyone (young and old)
laughing. I had read some pretty
negative comments about Vin Diesel
playing this role, don't believe them.
Take your family to see a
charming, entertaining movie and laugh
all the way home.

It's a class offered by some high
schools to help future teachers get a
jump start on college.
It was started at Martinsville
High School last year and students say
