Arthur Killam, or Art as he is
known around the Unity Church, stood at
attention as he received his long
awaited Purple Heart.

The medal is given out to service
men or women injured by enemy action in
war.

00:20:07NAT SOUND:long time coming

December 10, 1941 Killam was
aboard the USS Seadragon.

The submarine was docked in the
Philippines when the navy shipyard came
under attack.

ART KILLAM:IT WAS 81 BOMBERS CAME OVER
THERE DROPPING FIVE HUNDRED POUND
BOMBS, AND THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT WHEN
THEY GOT THROUGH

The Seadragon's sister ship took
a direct hit, Killam says the
concussion from the blast knocked him
from his boats hatch.

ART KILLAM:I FELL ABOUT, WELL FROM THE
CONNING TOWER DOWN TO THE CONTROL ROOM
DECK IS ABOUT 12, 13 FEET SOMETHING
LIKE THAT, AND I WENT HANDS AND LEGS IN
THE AIR WHEN I WENT DOWN.

Killam landed on the tip of his
spine but never did get the injury
officially checked.

ART KILLAM:I WOULDN'T GO TO THE SICK
BAY, I DIDN'T WANT TO GET STUCK THERE.

63 years later Killam got a call
from a Navy historian, saying they had
gathered enough evidence to award him
the Purple Heart, despite the lack of
official paper work.

Killam's family and friends were
noticibly moved as the former Chief
