It was more than 60 years ago,
but Arthur Killam clearly remembers the
day his submarine came under attack in
the South Pacific.
Now, 87 years old, the Roanoke
County man finally recieves an honor he
has been waiting for since that day.

Arthur Killam, or Art as he is
known around the Unity Church, stood at
attention as he received his long
awaited Purple Heart.
The medal is given out to service
men or women injured by enemy action in
war.

December 10, 1941 Killam was
aboard the USS Seadragon.
The submarine was docked in the
Philippines when the navy shipyard came
under attack.

THERE DROPPING FIVE HUNDRED POUND
BOMBS, AND THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT WHEN
THEY GOT THROUGH
The Seadragon's sister ship took
a direct hit, Killam says the
concussion from the blast knocked him
from his boats hatch.
ART KILLAM:I FELL ABOUT, WELL FROM THE
CONNING TOWER DOWN TO THE CONTROL ROOM
DECK IS ABOUT 12, 13 FEET SOMETHING
LIKE THAT, AND I WENT HANDS AND LEGS IN
THE AIR WHEN I WENT DOWN.
Killam landed on the tip of his
spine but never did get the injury
officially checked.
ART KILLAM:I WOULDN'T GO TO THE SICK
BAY, I DIDN'T WANT TO GET STUCK THERE.
63 years later Killam got a call
from a Navy historian, saying they had
gathered enough evidence to award him
the Purple Heart, despite the lack of
official paper work.
Killam's family and friends were
noticibly moved as the former Chief
Electrition of the U.S.S. Seadragon
recieved his purple heart.

introduce the man they've picked to
lead the city schools.
Marvin Thompson is due to
sign the contract that will bring him
to Roanoke as the city's next
superintendent.

The area he supervises has
18-thousand students -- and though he
has been at that job less than a year,

more test to take, one that measures
abnormal curvature of the spine.
The state Board of Education
is requiring schools to adopt screening
or information programs for Scoliosis.
Each school division will have
to examine students in fifth through
tenth grades for signs of the
condition, provide their parents with
information about the disorder or
implement a screening program.
A school health specialist says
many school divisions already screen
certain grades for scoliosis.

Friday Crews have removed a tractor-trailer
that drove off a bridge and into the
Chesapeake Bay.
The accident happened Friday morning on
the north side of the Chesapeake Bay
bridge-tunnel.
Divers say they found evidence of a
*fire* when they reached the cab.
Officials say the driver, an employee
for Pepsi-Cola Bottling, was on his way
to Eastern Shore from Virginia Beach.
His body was recovered later that
afternoon.
Investigators say now that the truck
has been pulled out of the water, they
can begin looking into a possible
cause.

returns online, and -- on average --
are getting more money back than they
were this time a year ago.
Seventy-two percent of the
returns filed by Virginian residents
through February 25th were e-filed,

year.
The average refund so far is nine
percent higher than last year at two-

effort at Virginia Tech.

commemorative magnets in January.
The University began selling the
10 by six-inch magnets to pay tribute
to Lieutenant Jeffrey Kaylor from
Clifton, and Lieutenant Timothy Price
of Midlothian.
Both men were members of the Corp
of Cadets and were killed in Iraq.
First month sales have netted
more than 10-thousand dollars for
scholarships.
The scholarship will help high
school seniors entering the Corps of
Cadets.

January 2005 Meanwhile, fundraising efforts
for people a half-a-world away are
moving forward.
Virginia Tech announced this week
its nearing the halfway point in its
effort to raise money for tsunami
relief.
Hokies United had raised about
39-thousand dollars in donations.
The efforts kicked off at the end
of January when the school hosted a
silent parade of flags to raise
awareness and honor those lost during
the December tsunami.
The group has a goal of
100-thousand dollars.

female bishop in the Episcopal Church
will step down from the troubled
Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia.
According to a member of the
panel that drew up the buy-out
agreement, the Right Reverend Carol
Gallagher has verbally agreed to leave
the post of bishop *sufragan,* or
second in command.
Terms of the buyout are
confidential.
The deal comes after a recent
attempt by the diocese to oust its
bishop, the Right Reverend David Bane
Junior, because of problems with his
leadership style.
The Diocese of Southern
Virginia has about 120 churches
covering from Appomattox, Campbell and
Pittsylvania Counties eastward.
