The Pontiff sat and listened to

The dolphins' beaching closely
followed submarine training exercises

Navy and wildlife experts are
checking to see if the use of sonar on
a submarine triggered the beaching.

The Navy won't say if sonar was
used during a training exercise
involving the U-S-S "Philadelphia."

A day later the dolphins started
beaching themselves.

More than 20 have died.

Some scientists say that loud
bursts of sonar, which can be heard for
miles in the water, may disorient or
scare marine mammals.

OQ=KC, CBS NEWS. <<"WHEN I FIRST DID IT, YOU KNOW, I WAS
(END SOT) 23, MY FIRST YEAR IN THE BIG LEAGUES."

Darryl Hamilton retired in 2001. An
outfielder -- he played in both leagues
-- and made millions of dollars in a
kids game..sometimes with the help of
an adult drug.

(nat) "YOU'RE A PLAYER AND A FAN, HUH?
I THINK YOU HAVE TO BE."

He is one of only a few players to talk
publicly about using greenies.

(DARRYL)

"IT GOT MY ADRENALINE FLOWING, IT GOT
ME GOING BEFORE A GAME."

Hamilton says greenies were part of the
clubhouse culture... the cure-all for a
long season, a long road trip, or an
all-night party.

"IF YOU ARE HAVING A ROUGH DAY, IF
YOU'RE TIRED, A GUY MAY COME UP TO YOU
AND SAY LOOK, I'VE GOT SOMETHING IF YOU
WANT TO TAKE IT. IT'LL GET YOU THROUGH
THE DAY."

But amphetamines can cause an abnormal
heartbeat, seizure, even death. The
government puts them in the same class

as cocaine and PCP. The only legitimate
use is to treat a handful of medical
conditions like hyperactivity.

The N-F-L, N-B-A, the International
Olympic Committee, even MINOR LEAGUE
BASEBALL - all ban amphetamines.

Gary Wadler helps set the rules that
govern Olympic drug policy. He says
amphetamine use in baseball is not only
a health issue, it's a fairness issue.

"THE SCIENCE IN TERMS OF IN-FIELD
RESEARCH WITH ATHLETES AND ACTUAL
COMPETITION HAVE SHOWN A ONE TO TWO
PERCENT INCREASE IN PERFORMANCE AND I
MIGHT SAY, IN THE WORLD OF
PERFORMANCE-ENHANCING DRUGS, THAT SMALL
PERCENT IS VERY REAL."

Players aren't sold on that
argument...and neither is the league.

Major League Baseball President Bob
DuPuy (DU-PAY) says even if the league
finds amphetamines ARE
performance-enhancing, management can't
ban them unless the player's union
agrees.

The players union refused to talk to
CBS News. But privately players have
told Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci
that this could be a tougher fight than

steroids, because greenies are as
ingrained in the game as balls and
strikes.

Not all ballplayers use Amphetamines,
of course. But no one knows how many
do. After five years Darryl Hamilton
stopped using them. He says amphetamine
use is not as common as it once
was....and that the steroids scandal
has image-conscious players scared
straight.>>

V-Dot will increase the speed

The 17-mile stretch of road is
between Route 57 and Route 58 Business.

Bond says a law passed last year
has allowed V-Dot to raise the speed.

In the past, only an *interstate*
could be 65-miles per hour.

Bond says roads in the Lynchburg
region have already made the change and
the Roanoke Valley may see some speed
changes as well.

The *No Keys Left Behind*
campaign encourages drivers to always
take their keys with them when they
leave their car for gas, ATM
withdrawls, and convenience store
purchases.

According to State Police --
20-percent of the cars stolen today
have the key left in them.

The campaign is all part of a
bigger project called the Virginia
H.E.A.T Program, which is focused on
stemming the amount of car theft in
Virginia.

world

But if you can be old and still look
good, why not do the town every now

and then? ... In a car made especially
for the elderly.

Now at Japanese car shows... Cars for
the old are the new rage.

The Japanese started with cars already
designed for those with

handicaps. If people can drive
without arms or legs, why not people

whose only handicap is age?

With seats that swivel out and turn
into a wheelchair, the seat is

designed to match the interior of the
car to make older people feel that

they look as normal as everyone else in
the vehicle

There are backseat holders that swallow
up the wheelchair for the older

driver... Or special lifts in the rear
of the van that help store the

wheelchair.

Nissan formed a special subsidiary to

build cars for older people.

Demand has more than doubled in the
last five years.. And as world

populations age, they're building into
a boom

(Barry Petersen OC) It's all meant to
make it easier for older people

to get around town. Studies have shown
that the more older people get

out, the more they interact with the
world around them -- the healthier

they are..

So grandma.. If you're watching this
from a wheelchair, why not take us

for a ride. In Japan at least age is
no longer a barrier to the call of

the open road.
