investigating a late night accident
that left one person dead and another
in critical condition.

Shortly after 11 last night,
police say a car driven by Charles
Scott Golden of Buena Vista ran off of
Old Buena Vista Road and hit an
embankment.

The passenger, Thomas Preston
Lunsford the Second was pronounced dead
at the scene.

Golden was medflighted to
Lynchburg General Hospital where he
remains in critical condition.

Neither were wearing seatbelts.

Marvin Thomspon will be be formally
introduced to the public as Roanoke
City School's new superintendent
tomorrow.

serves as an associate superintendent.

The area he supervises has
18-thousand students -- and though he
has been at that job less than a year,
he says he's ready to lead the Roanoke

ENG#=1 a submarine only three days after Pearl

Harbor.

Now, more than six decades later,
the 87 year old Roanoke County native
has finally recieved the purple heart.

December 10, 1941 Killam was
aboard the USS Seadragon.

The submarine was docked in the
Philippines when the navy shipyard came
under attack.

spine but never did get the injury
officially checked.

63 years later Killam got a call
from a Navy historian, saying they had
gathered enough evidence to award him
the Purple Heart, despite the lack of
official paper work.

January We first told you about the
commemorative Virginia Tech magnets in
January.

The University began selling the
10 by six-inch magnets to pay tribute
to Lieutenant Jeffrey Kaylor from
Clifton, and Lieutenant Timothy Price
of Midlothian.

Both men were members of the

Corps of Cadets and were killed in
Iraq.

First month sales have netted
more than 10-thousand dollars for
scholarships.

The scholarship will help high
school seniors entering the Corps of
Cadets.
