Nine-men and one woman are behind
bars after the Sheriff's Office says
they stole payroll checks from a local
business and tried to cash them.

Just after Noon yesterday,
authorities responded to
two-simultaneous calls from the Bank of
Botetourt in Daleville and Buchanan.

One man escaped authorities and
led them on a manhunt for several
hours.

He was eventually apprehended.

Authorities say similar events
and circumstances have been reported in
Roanoke County and Raleigh County, West
Virginia.

went to the jury Friday and so far the
panel has not reached a verdict.

Bakley.

She was shot to death in May of

yesterday in connection with a
multi-million dollar cigarette
smuggling ring.

Some nine million dollars worth
of contraband cigarettes were smuggled
from Virginia, where taxes were low, to
California.

week that he is the target of a federal
criminal investigation, allegedly
involving the finances of a non-profit
corporation he helped establish.

Hutcherson's colleagues on city
council certainly understood his
reluctance to appear at City Hall last

mayor and everyone else wanted this
speech to focus not on him, but on the
